I read this as a novella published in a series of novellas called "Binary Star" which features two novellas published at the same time.

I was pleased to learn, a few years back, the the author has expanded this an published it as a novel.

It has fueled my long standing obsession with anthropomorphic fiction which started when I watched "Planet of the Apes," as a kid.
