I think shredding is highly over-rated, tho' I'd have to admit I might have a different perspective were I any good at it! 
I have spent some time working on my tone and looking to get to the sweet nirvana of that "just right" sound. Some of the greats have done that ie, Clapton, Santana, etc., and you can spot top players by hearing their tone as much as by their playing signatures. For me, shredding is one of many tools in a player's tool kit and whilst I'd like to be able to do it better, the return on investment in time etc., is less fulfilling that sharpening other tools in the box.
But as I said if I were good at it..........

Forgive me if I'm wrong, God knows I'm no musical expert, but it seems all of dANdeLION's links are a joke. It's like someone played along to the video(s), dubbing very bad music over the original. That is the kind of thing dANdeLION would to, too. I might not have caught it instrumentally, as I'm not familiar with most of the artists, but that's clearly not Jon Anderson's voice on the Yes cut.
