Captain America: The First Avenger
I never really liked Captain America comics, but I wanted to be Captain America. In fact I was Captain America on Amwell Road Baseball our local no-pads tackle football team--makes sense right? No.
I always thought Bucky was a wuss and the Red Skull overused. So I went into this jaded from the start. Being set in the WW2 era it was easy to put "jingoism" aside and root for the good guys. This was an almost "human" story that actually talked about morals-as in good-being a good guy, standing up for things and Bucky turned out to be a true, well-rounded, ally. Having the old Sgt. Fury (not to be confused with Nick Fury) combat squad thrown in was great too. Hugo Weaving did a fabulous job as the Red Skull and I actually liked the character--now rendering Dr. Doom to the top of my Marvel wuss villains. At the end I was ready to send $ to Charles Atlas and buy the funky gray Army/Navy Assault toys they used to advertise in the back of the books. It was a good fun ride-and I couldn't beat it only paying 6 bucks for 3D in New York State AND being the only one in the theater.
I haven't seen Norton's Hulk, but this movie, Thor and the two Ironman movies have got me totally psyched for The Avengers (little bummed that Hawkeye isn't in it, but that's OK).

In the Avengers? Isn't Hawkeye the guy with the Bow and Arrow in the Promo Posters for the Avengers?danlo wrote:I haven't seen Norton's Hulk, but this movie, Thor and the two Ironman movies have got me totally psyched for The Avengers (little bummed that Hawkeye isn't in it, but that's OK).

Yeah, he's being played by Jeremy Renner.sindatur wrote:In the Avengers? On topic: This is the best Marvel superhero movie in my opinion. This one, out of all others, had the most soul... and it showed a typical 'cliche' super hero and did an awesome job of it!
The Red Skull was absolutely amazing... I can't wait to see him again!
And Norton's Hulk I rank as the same as Thor (Thor is a little better). It's a solid movie, but it has nothing on Iron Man and certainly not Capt. America. Still haven't seen Iron Man 2, but I got a year, right?

I wonder what role the Cosmic Cube (The 'Tesseract' that the Red Skull was using) will play in the Avengers movie? According to the after credits scene from Thor, looks like quite a bit.

Black Widow. Black Canary is a DC character.danlo wrote:Really!? I'm happy now--didn't see him in the after credits promo---I think I saw Johansen's character-Black Widow, or Canary or whatever...
In the comic books, Nick Fury and Sgt. Fury were the same person.danlo wrote:Having Howard Stark in their was great too...was Nick Fury Sgt. Fury's son or grandson? Nick battled Hydra as well, right?

this was my favorite comic book movie of all time. plenty of action, plenty of story that didn't bog everything down.
and plenty of easter eggs for us geeks. (the human torch, union jack...)
and the promo for the avengers was great!
julie also liked the film very much.

I was surprised that it was as good as it was. I've never collected Cap regularly, but I have many in my 2,000-ish comics. The movie was just what I expected. It could have been bad, and still been just what I expected, if that makes sense. What they did was expected, but how they did it - the dialog, filming, effects, etc - was very good. Just like the best of his comics.
Hugo rocks. I didn't know he was playing the Red Skull until dlb told me a couple days before I saw it. Worth seeing just for him.
Yes, having Howard Stark was a great way to tie all these movies together.
Anyway, can't freakin' wait for the Avengers!!!!
danlo, Norton's Hulk was really great. He brought the same element to it that Bill Bixby brought to the tv show. We cared about it, when we might not have otherwise.

Took me a while to post this opinion but better late than never.
Cap was very good. It was clear to me from the beginning that the filmmakers "got it" and that was very gratifying.
I won't bother to echo everyone's praise beyond the simple fact that I agree. The Avengers is now the most anticipated superhero film to me by a huge margin. Even more than Iron Man 3.
My only complaint about Cap was the use of such over the top designs for the "cube" powered weapons. All that blue glow pulled me out of the reality of the film. Not very much but enough for me to notice and I would prefer not to notice.
I've read up on advanced Nazi weapons and I guess I would have preferred to have things pulled back closer to reality. However I had no problem with the flying wing.
I don't think that's a spoiler.

In the comic, 20 years passed before Captain America resurfaced, so the 20-something Sgt Fury aged into the 40-something Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.danlo wrote:So the combat squad was actually Sgt. Fury's Howling Commandos right? OK if so why is Fury absent...is there just no explanation? If Sgt. Fury is Nick Fury then does he undergo the same cryogenics, or is no explanation necessary?
Now that the 20 is 70, I guess Marvel decided it would be best to not have a Sgt. Fury.

I was pleasantly surprised by this. I really liked the "weakling with the heart of a hero" theme. I had no idea that's how Captain America started out. Can you tell I don't read comics?
The story was decent, and fairly slow-paced for a blockbuster. Mostly character driven, until the third act. This easily could have been cheesy and silly, but it had some balls. Can't wait to see where it's going.
