Midnight in Paris

Post by Cambo »

Excellent, funny film built on a whimsical premise: a frustrated writer with a romantic soul, on holiday in Paris, finds himsefl transported to the 1920s every midnight. He hangs out with heavyweights like the Fitzgeralds, Ernest Hemingway, Picasso....the whole bunch of literati and artists from his "golden era."

The characters are all wonderfully drawn, modern and historical. Hemingway is deshevelled and compelling. Salvador Dali and the surrealists are hilarious.

A film to spark lively and cheerful discussion afterward. Highly recommend.

Dunno how new it is over there, we're generally quite a bit behind America in box office releases, but I saw it at the movies.

Despite it being a Woody Allen movie and starring Owen Wilson, I managed to watch the entire film.
"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

Those two count against me enjoying it, too! But I am willing to give it a go.

I know what you guys mean about Owen Wilson. One of the perks of this movie for me was that it proved that The Darjeeling Express wasn't soem cosmic fluke- given a good script and director, the man can actually act!

Owen Wilson has a frenetic neurosis about him that is similar to Allen, which is why he was chosen. He can deliver Woody Allen lines with comparable humor and pathos.

I saw it this summer, and liked it. Always been a fan of the 'Lost Generation' era types like Hemingway. I wish I could live out the fantasy in the movie. After watching the movie, the wife and I agreed that Paris is now definitely on the agenda, when we can.

This film drove me stark raving mad @_@ for the second time (as far as I can remember) in my life.

Aside from that it was a pretty enjoyable romp.
