Def Leppard

Post by dlbpharmd »

This past weekend, while going through some boxes in my attic, I came across 2 old friends: Def Leppard's High 'n' Dry and Pyromania. Holy shit, I'd forgotten how good this band was, back in the days before Hysteria, when they sold out to the bubble gum crowd. I bet I haven't listened to either CD in over 20 years, but the music sounds so fresh to me.

Of the 2 CDs, I think I prefer Pyromania on the basis on track strength. Photograph may be the best rock song of all time, and I love Billie's got a gun and Coming Under Fire.

High 'n' Dry is just a rockum sockum good time from start to finish, every song is solid.

This music is taking me back to 9th grade, no responsibilities, no hassles. God, it feels good!

Word. My second hard rock love after Van Halen. Well third if you count Joan Jett.

Couldn't agree more. Pyromania kicks, and baby I'm not f-f-f-foolin'....

I've made it brutally clear, there ain't a bigger Def Leppard fan than I.

High 'N Dry is the greatest hard rock album ever recorded, period.

I've seen them on every tour, at least once, since Pyromania in 1983. That makes right around 20 times so far. They are one of the few bands I'll pay any amount of money to see, anytime I can.

Steve Clark (God rest his soul) was the Jimmy Page of the '80s, and a brilliant player.

People can (and do) make fun of Def Leppard. That's fine. You can't name any musician that wouldn't have sold a kidney to have written "Photograph", "Foolin", "Bringin' On the Heartache", or any number of their singles.

Take it easy bro, we're all DL fans here. Pyromania was a record I had to literally wrestle past my hyper-religious parents to get inside the house. I do admit that my interest in Def Leppard's recordings took a nose dive when Adrenalize came out.

The link was sort of an inside joke if you're familiar with CKY. Bam Margera was ragging his brother Jess, the drummer of the band CKY, for listening to Def Leppard obsessively. He was ragging on his brother not the band. And I kind of like the take on the song as a lark, even though the original is definitely my favorite DL song. But well short of a holy relic.

Adrenalize was painful knowing that they had Phil re-record all of Steve's parts. Listen to "Tonight" or "White Lightning". Both of those songs were recorded with Steve, then re-recorded without him. Phil apes his style, but just can't achieve his tone or his feel.

Quality songs on Adrenalize, screwed up by the re-recording.

Cail, I'm still waiting to hear from Joe Elliot. You promised to give him my digits but he never called...

Now we just need to get them up on Spotify so I can listen to Pyromania all day long.

DL is one of the last holdouts for iTunes, also. I'm not sure why.

I've never been into DL, but I recently had a similar experience when my wife bought me ACDC's Back in Black. I hadn't listened to it in 20+ years, as I followed a musical path into prog and fusion, etc. It was nice to come back to simple, power-chord jams. It's also fun to introduce the kids to something they've never heard, and have them love it.

wish i had been able to see them when they came to Houston. the only band i listen to for the production values. they knew how to write MASSIVE hooks that just captivate you.

and i share their love of glam rock. :)
