The 7 Thing

Post by Sherman Landlearner »

Okay, so there is...
7 Wards of Kevin's Lore,
7 Words, of which we've seen six, apparently,
and there's 7 "bad guys"-
Lord Foul
Samadhi(Raver 1)
Moksha(Raver 2)
Turiya(Raver 3)
Ur-viles
Cavewights
Kresh

Why does SRD love the #7 so much? What the duck?

Any ideas, no matter how crazy, are more than welcome. Please.

It's common to use some numerological ideas to put forth ideas in the story without actually dwelling on the ideas in the prose itself. In literature, both fantastical and literary, the most common numbers used to convey a 'transcendent' are '3' and '7'. If someone really trusts his readers, he might even use '12'. '7' and '3' have very specific connotations, '7' meaning 'complete' in a work sense (The 7 Wards together is THE complete Ward) and '3' often referring to a complete, interconnected godhead of sorts (think Trinity).

As a result, I don't view the enemies in a group of '7', they are not fabrications even if they are tools. The Ravers themselves are very much interconnected, interchangeable, etc. they are a sort of inverted, demonic godhead.

Now, if an author uses numbers to convey a concept, it is usually fairly obvious. I. E., you know there are 3 Ravers and 7 wards and 7 Words of Power from the get-go. This isn't always the case. Often times, when I've seen 12 used in such a way, it was just stumbling upon it (For example :oh! Grendel has twelve chapters, and each one has some manifestation of each of the Zodiac signs. What doyaknow.)
'Tis dream to think that Reason can
Govern the reasoning creature, man.

^What they said (I was going to state something similar).

Even though SRD snagged some World Serpents and vargar and heroic sea-faring giants straight from our myths, he at least didn't go for the whole threes-and-nines mysticism.

In Sanderson's Mistborn series, the number 16 plays a significant role in relation to higher powers.

because people like patterns and look for them. seven has long been given mystical meaning...

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/7_(number)

The Millennium Prize Problems are seven problems in mathematics that were stated by the Clay Mathematics Institute in 2000. As of June 2012, six of the problems remain unsolved. A correct solution to any of the problems results in a US$1,000,000 prize (sometimes called a Millennium Prize) being awarded by the institute. The Poincaré conjecture, the only Millennium Prize Problem to be solved so far, was solved by Grigori Perelman, but he declined the award in 2010.

The seven problems are:
1.P versus NP problem
2.Hodge conjecture
3.Poincaré conjecture (Solved)
4.Riemann hypothesis
5.Yang–Mills existence and mass gap
6.Navier–Stokes existence and smoothness
7.Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture

Funny, funny, F+F. But if he isn't Red Sox, I definitely don't know him. I might not know all the RS, but I try. Except for Bobby Valentine. Seriously, we might need a THOOBVH soon, if he keeps stinking But that's totally a THOOOTP post. Sorry.

Oh, you young'ins!

:)

Coaching my son's little league team the other day and one of the kids caught a fly ball Willie May's style (old people like me will know what that means). I told him he looked like Willie and he said "who?"

I weep for our children some times :)

I've seen a few decades and haven't ever heard that name before. Then again, I don't expect everyone here to know who or what Paavo Nurmi is. ;) :P

In Biblical numerology, "7" is a number symbolizing completion. Given SRD's fundamentalist upbringing, he may have subconciously thought of this when writing 1st Chronicles (ie, 7 Wards, 7 Words, etc.)
