Through the Wormhole: Can We Eliminate Evil?

The catholic church is the largest pro-pedophillia group in the world, and every member of it is guilty of supporting the rape of children, the ensuing protection of the rapists, and the continuing suffering of the victims.
I never saw this show before. What station is it on? The episode on the link was very good.
Recently I have been thinking about myself and violence. My core reaction to violence has changed over the years. I used to like watching 'thrillers' but as I am getting older I find I cringe and turn away from them. Even thoughts of violence have changed in my own mind. I don't feel the surges of vehemence I used to feel. My theory is that it is hormone related in some way. Not a testosterone thing but hormones in general drive our day to day thoughts. Just my unsubstantiated theory.

The loudest truth I ever heard was the softest sound.

Very interesting. Reminds me of a short story I once read in SF&F. The setting is kind of like that in Gattica, but instead of setting his son up for success, this guy's father makes sure his son has a plethora of anti-social mental and physical physiology. I forget the details, but essentially, this 'bad motherf***er ends up saving a bunch of people because he has what it takes.
"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

That's interesting lorin, the show does suggest that violence is inherent in human nature, but so is the ability to suppress it and hopefully overcome it.lorin wrote:I never saw this show before. What station is it on? The episode on the link was very good.

Through the Wormhole with Morgan Freeman runs on the Discovery Science Channel, though most of the episodes seem to be on YouTube (at least so far, a lot of tv shows are eventually deleted by the copyright holders). Here's a link to the wikipedia entry with a convenient list of the available episodes: Through the Wormhole: Episode Guide.

That is one interesting thing about psychopaths, they aren't always malevolent. Sometimes they are just bold risk-takers that lack a lot of the restraints that come with fear and conformity. In other words, a lot of times they are also society's leaders and achievers, and yes protectors. It has long been known that pschopaths (the non-evil kind, commonly called "sheep dogs" as opposed to the antisocial "wolves") tend to accumulate in special forces and elite military and law enforcement units.[Syl Embattled] wrote:Very interesting. i think a certain bit of violent streak helps. in my job anyway. my willingness to engage in the possibility of violence has actually saved me from getting into any violent confrontations.
therefore i now have a reputation of the willingness, so i have a much more sedate workplace.
hopefully the snake keeps eating it's own tail for me in this regard.
