"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

Ok, asking for some help here. Can't remember where it was, but I think it was a lucimay thread ranting (justifiably so) at the distinction between 'literature' and 'science fiction/fantasy'. From memory, u (I'd type his full name but I can't spell the blasted thing) was also a prominent part of the discussion.
Anybody?
ETA: Thanks to some super sleuthing by Effaeldm, I now nominate this thread...

the difference between evidence and sources: whether they come from the horse's mouth or a horse's ass.
"Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else's opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation."
the hyperbole is a beauty...for we are then allowed to say a little more than the truth...and language is more efficient when it goes beyond reality than when it stops short of it.

I nominate Have you changed your opinions over the years? And..
A wonderful topic - people understanding something, accepting positions of others, perhaps becoming better. And I generally like not sticking to an opinion stubbornly, listening to what else may me known and understood.

Umm you need to nominate materials from 2010 or 2011; only the ongoing spotlight awards pertain to the present year.deer of the dawn wrote:The Sexy Thread!!

I nominate The Fist-Shaking thread!
"People without hope not only don't write novels, but what is more to the point, they don't read them.
They don't take long looks at anything, because they lack the courage.
The way to despair is to refuse to have any kind of experience, and the novel, of course, is a way to have experience."
-Flannery O'Connor
"In spite of much that militates against quietness there are people who still read books. They are the people who keep me going."
-Elisabeth Elliot, Preface, "A Chance to Die: The Life and Legacy of Amy Carmichael"
