Vegemite

Post by Damelon »

I thought there was a thread about this somewhere....

Anyway, while visiting Duchess we came across some vegemite at a deli in Ann Arbor. (More about that trip on the Midwest Giantclave thread.) I have 113g jar of the stuff, that I paid $6 for. My question to you Aussies is... How do you eat this stuff? Also, once I open this, should I stick the jar in the fridge, or will it stay good in the cabinet? :)

Ok Damelon... the key to eating vegemite for the uninitiated is ...... to spread it very thinly. Usually on hot buttered toast is the best....also on english muffins too. You can spread it on sandwiches with cheese and on cripbreads and top it with cream cheese or cottage cheese or have it by itself. My fave is grilled cheese and vegemite on toast. I posted a link to the vegemite site in one of these threads but im too lazy to go and look for it so i'll post it again.

Also ... there is a new product out on the shelves here called Vegemite in a Biscuit .... same principle as Chicken in a Biscuit only using vegemite.

You can just keep it in the cupboard.

Best way to eat vegemite is to use a teaspoon and just shovel it in from the jar.

Allright, I'll try some for breakfast tomorrow, if I have the time....

Shoveling it in at $6 for a small jar! That sounds a little extravagent to me. :D

Landwaster, you and I can shovel it in by the spoonful... we've been raised on the stuff. But Damelon would keel over if he did that.

Well, I tried some.

It looks like road tar. It tastes better with cheese than alone with butter.

My question is - Do you have to watch your salt intake if you eat this?

I think there's a fair bit of salt in it.

Let this be said ... vegemite is in NO way related to whipped cream! You should never use it as a toy!
