Time Travel Returns!?

Post by SkurjMaster »

Fellow Watchers,

I think there will be more time travel in The Last Dark. Simple reason:

If stuff in the Land and ist Earth, even the stars, are being devoured, what is the setting in which the book's action will take place?

The only answer is to go back in time.

Heh...kinda related to the other thread you recently started, I would fear the return of time travel.
It would be a cheap way out/around, not a way forward.
I think the powers that be will face, stand, and deliver in the rapidly shrinking time available.
[I was glad when time travel was "defeated,"...I was glad that he made time travel in itself, independent of WHO was doing it, WHETHER they/their plans and intentions were good or evil, a threat.]

With Joan's death, Linden would have to creat a ceasure in order to go back in time. With her experience before (Demondim came forward in time,) I doubt she'll be likely to repeat the experience.

I think we're done with time travel in the Last Chronicles.

TC has a Ring now and he used to be the Time Warden, Linden has a Ring and the Staff, even Jeremiah has some kind of time traveling power. I can't see how time travel isn't going to be used in the LD.

I was just thinking this the other day. In Against All Things Ending the only role caesures play is as a threat during some of the fighting, and it doesn't seem right in the story as established that they'd not be used again. They must be pivotal.

I don't have the book available to me (I'm at work...but Watch-addicted, so I am here anyway), but in addition to being threats during battles, I seem to remember caesures being pretty significant to the events in the last few chapters when TC is confronting Joan.

You are absolutely correct. TC ends up 'confronting' Joan in between time, as it were, and nearly gets trapped.

At the end though, Linden was knocking them down like they were merely an annoyance not like in Runes when they were almost beyond comprehension.

Perhaps...but my reading of that was different, and I don't buy that...Joan wasn't between time, if he [and/or the Har] hadn't escaped they would never have seen Joan. She was in time and place. He killed her there and then, which is exactly the same time as everyone else.
And HLT is correct...Linden is a total master of caesura now.
I can possibly see the final battle happening in a total ceasura...timeless for everyone, as an arena...but no more "go back in the past, meet famous people, change their story, return to now, spank LF's [or his minions] butt" things.

If Mahrtiir has to go a long way to find his heart's desire, and this "long way" can be conceived of as physical distance of any kind, well...

I'm rereading AATE and there's a little tidbit that, to me, is practically proof there will be more time antics.

When TC is remembering his big meeting with all of the dead, the Theomach councels something to this effect: We have a problem of Time, and thus Time will be the answer to the problem.

He is strongly implying that time travel will lead to a solution to at least one of their issues. TC then desperately tries to recover the memory and what was planned, but of course loses it.

Time is the remedy

Post by SkurjMaster »

Time is also discussed in the context of the mobius strip. If there is not time travel in the final book, there will still be something about time. What better way to wrap this story up by 'rebooting' it all by stranding all of the banes outside the arch and restart the Earth's history without them inside? History starts over (mobius strip), but the answer to Caerroil Wildwood's question is answered. No, beauty does not have to fade and creation stop since it can all start over again. This time without all of the eternal entities there to mess it up.

That'd be like reverse Platonism: instead of the world being perfected by conforming completely to the Forms, the world is beatified (beauty and beatitude given together) by being separated from the eternal standard, no longer taxed with the burden of having to live up to an unattainable infinite measure.

That's actually nearly exactly one of the basic principles of my Grand Unified Chronicles Theory.

With Jermiah having his mind back, this open a swarm of possibilities.
He makes doors.
Doors to anywhere.
Name it and he could probably construct it.
Doors to prisons, to hide in, to fool anything, to state anything, confuse, time travel...etc.

All he needs is the knowledge and material to contruct it.
He is the dues eX machina.

It was presume that Carroil Wildwood passed from knowledge and existance between the 1st and second chronicle. It was never fully explained.

Big if.. what if he was tranported to Salva Gildenbourne and became the new
Forrestal of that wood?

Jerry opens up the last book. and he has his mind back.
What's this silver looking ring doing on my finger?

As a general comment, I'd say that on one hand we're talking about fantasy where the only limits to what is possible are those of the author's imagination (and SRD has one of the biggest and best of those) but on the other hand it would be very unlike SRD to bring something in that would render the story facile and spare the key characters the trials we've been led to expect that they will face.

Time travel returns

Post by SkurjMaster »

Savor,

I will take that as a YES, since I think that it would have been very easy to have replied NO, if that was indeed the case, given all of the fuss about time travel here on the Watch.

Of course, RAFO I guess.
