The Sweeny

Post by Cail »

Holy crap, what a great movie.

Imagine Michael Mann being British and making Miami Vice with Ray Winstone as the lead. That's this movie. It's got the feel of MV and Heat (one of the 5 best films of the '90s), with a heaping portion of Snatch thrown in.

It's a cop movie full of clichés, but they're good clichés, and this is really well done. Easily the best movie I've seen this year.

Wow Cail - just found this post! I watched the original John Thaw series on television and didn't watch the movie because it wasn't given high ratings in comparison by the UK press - but I wanted to and now I will.

I completely enjoyed it.

But as I said, it really uses all the well-worn action movie cliches.

Finally got to see the film and agree with Cail 100%. I was a fan of the tv series and this film does not sell the classic combo of John Thaw and Dennis Waterman short. The film, although brought into a contempory setting [rather than trying to retain the original 1970's era] still manages to retain the gritty harshness of the programs, and of course Ray Winston is perfectly cast for achieving that end. The film rattles along and yes, it does follow a well trodden path, but when it is done this well who cares.

One point for the 'movie trivia' collectors - in one scene Winston and the director tip a nod to the actors first screen role as the imprisoned borstal boy Carlin in Scum [If you haven't seen it, it's Winston at his finest, but be warned - it ain't for the faint hearted]. I won't tell you what it is though in case you want to spot it for yourselves.
