Predestination

Post by Obi-Wan Nihilo »

Saw this tonight, it was pretty good. In fact I found a lot of metaphorical depth in the narrative about our in-some-sense solipsistic individual lives. Ultimately all our experiences are experiences of ourselves writ upon the universe. All love is self love. Anybody have any thoughts about this one?

Guess not, but FYI the movie is based on the Heinlein short story "All You Zombies" and involves a time paradox.

Saw it this last weekend. It was good, but we pretty much had the ending about 30 minutes in. I'd imagine that the pacing would put a lot of people off of this.

Saw it quite a while back, and enjoyed it. The twists were easily guessable before they were revealed in the film, which wouldn't have been so bad except that the very final shots of the film were filmed in such a way that the filmmakers clearly thought it was a shocking revelation when in fact it'd already been made clear several times over in the previous ten minutes.

Yes. All it really needed was subtitles saying, "GET IT?!?!?!"

I think the final montage is more for clarity's sake and stylistic consistency than as a genuine shock. You pretty much know the scoop by then, its almost explicitly laid out in dialogue over the last half of the film.
Spoiler
The thing that interested me most was the way Jane/John came to view the conventional timestream, and consequently its people, as in some sense unreal unchanging automata. And there were some interesting metaphors about the process of self knowledge and self love contained within the narrative -- Jane / John's only real relationship was with her/himself -- but I'm not quite sure where I stand with the way its portrayed. It's hard to pin down for instance how time seems fixed within the main narrative and yet the allusion to changing events (including the entire idea of a time travelling police force -- what good is it if nothing can be changed?) is a bit hard to square with that.
