Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker

Post by peter »

Last night on Sky Arts I saw a complete production of the above ballet performed at the Royal opera House, Covent Garden by The Royal Ballet.

The production was superb - rich and sumptuous, and the dancing exquisite! This has to be my favorite ballet - and this was the best of the three versions I have seen by far. As with opera, it takes a few times before a ballet really begins to get under your skin [this possibly accounts for why I was so favoerably impressed by this version - but I do believe it really was the best] and one part in particular held me mesmerised. This was the dance performed by the sugar plum fairy and her cavalier just prior to her performance of the famous 'dance of the sugar plum fairy' routine [there is a small but skillfull dance performed by the cavelier on his own in between these two, but it only lasts a minute or so].

Seems silly, but I'm trying to identify the name of that part of the music and am having trouble doing so. It's a beautiful 'rolling' refrain [if thats the right word] during which the spf and her soldier dance pretty much alone on the stage and as stated occurs pretty much just before 'the dance of the sugar plum fairy'. Any suggestions guys? If you get the chance to see the production I'm refering to [it's probably available online somewhere] grab it; I can't remember the last time I saw anything as beautiful as that dance and music combination!

[edit; Got it, I think - it appears to be called 'Nutcracker, pas-de-deux Intrada.]

Musically, my favorite part of The Nutcracker is the "Chinese Dance".
