Kong - Skull Island
A Tarzan and a Kong film in one year: all my dreams come true!
From the trailer this is going to be more gung-ho action than sentimental love story and I'm cool with that. I find Jackson's KK almost too painful to watch now and am ready for some straightforward smash it up jungle shenanigans - but I hope that they manage to retain Kongs essential goodness and they don't drag him off to NY. Most though I hope for once he gets to win and live to see the end of the film, he deserves it!

Looks like Godzilla and Kong are doing a Monster-type Avengers thing.
This should make you very happy.LEGENDARY AND WARNER BROS. PICTURES ANNOUNCE CINEMATIC FRANCHISE UNITING GODZILLA, KING KONG AND OTHER ICONIC GIANT MONSTERS
Burbank, CA - October 14, 2015 - Following Legendary's and Warner Bros. Pictures' 2014 success with the global reinvention of the Godzilla franchise, the companies have come together to create an epic, new shared cinematic franchise. All-powerful monsters become towering heroes for a new generation, revealing a mythology that brings together Godzilla and Legendary's King Kong in an ecosystem of other giant super-species, both classic and new. Monarch, the human organization that uncovered Godzilla in the 2014 film, will expand their mission across multiple releases.
The announcement that the reinvention of monsters continues was made today by Legendary CEO, Thomas Tull and Kevin Tsujihara, Chairman and CEO, Warner Bros. The initial trio of films are 2017's KONG: SKULL ISLAND, GODZILLA 2 in 2018 and then GODZILLA VS. KONG, arriving in theaters in 2020. While Legendary maintains its new home at Universal Pictures, the GODZILLA films remain in partnership with Warner Bros., who will now also distribute KONG as a part of this franchise. Production on KONG: SKULL ISLAND begins October 19th. [link]

Kong and Godzilla have gone head to head before, but aside from the octopus that has a go at Nemo's sub I struggle to think of any other giant monsters well known enough to make up an assembly.

.......and then there's always Megashark vs Giant Octopus.......
But (a bit more) seriously - I love a good monster film; if they can do an assembly film count me in!

The new trailer for Kong Island dropped and it expands quite a bit on the previous trailer. One thing that is better demonstrated is the size of Kong which has been amped up from his original 40' plus or minus size to Godzilla level proportions which helps establish how a Godzilla and King Kong film will relate properly. I suppose Legendary may involve giant Jager's from the Pacific Rim universe though the timeline and level of technology shown in the Godzilla reboot and the trailers for Kong Island seem to be far less advanced. Perhaps this could all come together in a not too distance future scenario.

They give a panoramic feel to the proceedings, displaying the jungle in all it's steamy majesty below the throbbing growl of the copter. I love those shots!

Yes the film is definitely set in the 1970s and it is possibly a second cousin sequel of sorts of the Peter Jackson film with the newer Kong a much larger relative of the first but I've not read anything that openly states this. How the knowledge of this Godzilla sized ape is kept out of the narrative of the recent Godzilla reboot makes little sense in the grand scheme but with some creative fact wrangling it can probably be explained away.wayfriend wrote:It feels from the trailer like Skull Island is set in the '70s. Am I wrong? Maybe it's just those Nam-ic helicopter shots.
Aside from the very recognizably dated Huey UH-1 Iroquois transport helicopters the crew of this expedition are also using M-16 machine guns, very Apocalypse Now.

HAH! That's like asking for a Whopper while ordering at McDonalds.
Like walking onto the lot at a Chevrolet dealership and shouting "Where do you keep all the Mustangs?"
Like standing in line to get autographs from the cast of Star Wars and being disappointed that William Shatner didn't show up.

Sorry. Couldn't resist. Actually since Gamera was originally owned by Daiei Film instead of Godzilla's TOHO, Legendary could strike up a deal with Kadokawa Pictures or whoever owns the rights now to get the character into their shared universe. I haven't heard any plans for such a thing though.

Second trailer looks awesome and puts some flesh on the bones of the first.
Did anyone see the Tom Cruise Mummy trailer yet - that looks pretty cool as well: like a sort of adulted up version of the story.

The wife just bought our tickets for this Saturday morning. Looking forward to it as the previews just get more and more interesting. The Tomatometer is currently at 81% and I have read some very favorable reviews.
I expect to like the film I just don't know if I'm going to love it.

Aint it Cool News wrote:Capone embraces the creative energy and hell-on-earth destruction that is KONG: SKULL ISLAND!!!
Aside from the great action sequences, the awe-inspiring special effects, and fantastic performances, KONG: SKULL ISLAND also looks stunning. After all, this is an island in the South Pacific. Why shouldn't it be gorgeous during sunsets and sunrises? If you're looking for deep character development, you might want to look elsewhere, but I'm guessing you're walking into this film to see giant creatures and mass destruction, so fully formed characters might not be on the top of your list of priorities. Thankfully, Vogt-Roberts doesn't get lost in dropping in too many easter-egg references to other Kong films and seems perfectly content in making this Kong movie into his own unique experience. More Asian monster movie than American giant-animal attack film, this movie is rich and unfiltered entertainment, and further proof that the summer movie season now begins in late winter. And a word of advice, stick around until after the credits; it's well worth it.

WaHeey!! I knew it would be good! Had a good feel to the trailers - and really pleased with the 'after credits' tip - I always normally blow before those!

Saw it in 2D last night and very much enjoyed it! All round good acting and sfx. Can't say too much for spoiler reasons, but if it's to be the first in a franchise then I'm thinking it will have legs. Fight scenes were spectacular and Kong engaging as ever. Damn good fun!
