I watched Return of the King...

And thought it was utter crap... inane, pathetic, giving no dignity to the books whatsoever? Where was the Voice of Saruman? Where was the Grey company? The Dead were utter s**t. I'm sorry, but they were. The ending was rubbish. Where was the Scouring of the Shire... All we got an old man pulling a face at the Hobbits - Complete crap. And the Palantir?! It just happened to be on the ground for Pippin to find, Yeah, right! The battles were rubbish, when I thought what they should be like from the books. Where was most of the Last Debate? The Houses of Healing? The love story between Eowyn and Faramir? The talk outside the Black Gate between Sourons mouth (Or whatever the guy was) and Gandalf? How come Merry was in the Last Battle?

I thought the entire film was crap, and the only redeeming part of the film were the credits.

Can't agree with you here DR I thought ROTK was much better than TTT! (I still like the first film the most) Sure they had missed or omitted some parts, it's virtually impossible to get it al in without making the film at least 5 hours long...
And I also missed Saruman... the "Whops we found a Palantir" bit was a bit disappointing... and as Ylva Kresh said on an other thread the "hangning from a cliff inside Mount Doom with only one good hand" was too much Hollywood...
But overall i thought it was a great film, exciting, beautiful and engaging...

But I deliberately tried to diminish my expectations before I went to see it... If you think it will be great you'll always get dissappointed even if the film was really good...

I did that also... But I was in a very bad mood when I went to see it. One of those comtempt for everything... Maybe that didn't help.

Erm... FYI, Ermingard, the latest rumour is that Peter Jackson thinks the Extended Addition will be more than 5 hours long - and they're putting the Sauron bit back in. That's why I prefer the Extended DVD to the cinema release.

Boy am I glad I didn't read the last book. There was nothing to interfere with my enjoyment of a terrific film. I really don't think I would have had any kind of problem with the film even if I had.

Maybe the Extended version will redeem the crapness of the original one

Okay first off, Ebert, if you wanted all that stuff you need to understand that the movie was already three hours and twenty minutes long. You can't just put all the stuff from the books in the movie, unless you plan on making camp in the theater and staying all night to watch it. Honestly, if you want all that crap in there, then just read the book. Quite frankly, the movie should be a little different from the book. It needs to not just be a pure interpretation of it, like those Harry Potter films (ugh).

You sound like one of those diehard Ringnuts--one of those purists who go "oh my god that line from the book wasn't used in the movie!" Honestly, stop nitpicking and at least look at all the great stuff that's in the movie: the spirit of the books is in there, the core story, all the best stuff is there, etc. It's just not realistic to have everything from the book--just not.

Or the least you could do was appreciate all the hard work--over a year--that the actors and film crew spent doing something that people once thought would never ever be able to do instead of just shrugging it off as "crap". Yesh.

I'm sorry, but you don't come to a movie expecting the book. And Peter Jackson and everybody else all over the Net for months told people that there'd be no Scouring and that there'd be no Voice of Saruman and several other things left out.

Tolkien purists are going to be disappointed. It would be impossible to include every scene from the novels, without making the thing twelve hours long . . . and this is not commercially viable.

I think Jackson and company did a splendid job within the limitations of film-making.

Perhaps I enjoyed it so much because I hadn't read the books in twenty years. However, I have read them six times, so I remember them pretty well despite the time-lapse. And these movies have captured all the messages and themes of the trilogy, and couched them within a very exciting story, with state-of-the-art special effects.

They are, in fact, the cinematic achievement of our times. Don't go there trying to find every little thing that was omitted. Go there and notice every brilliant thing that was included, and how well it was portrayed in transferring it from the written word.

In the field of fantasy films, nothing else has even come close to the level of greatness that we have seen here. If you don't believe me, go rent flicks like Dungeons and Dragons or Krull.

I appreciate that many things can't be put in there... I think it's becasue I was in a really bad mood.... Clouded my judgement. I think I'll go see it when I'm in a better mood.
