Downsizing

This film bombed at the box office, loosing money heavily for it's producers Paramount, but I found it a deeply engaging and human story with a heart as big as a lion's at it's unassuming core. Telling the story of Paul Safranek, a struggling occupational therapist and his wife Audry who decide to downsize (ie be shrunk down to a height of five inches) in order to realise the benefits, both environmental and financial, of small living, the film charts the chequered results of their decision and it's consequences. Engaging in many issues across its broad-brush approach to modern society and the effect we have on our home planet, the film never allows these weighty issues to ' bog us down' and by its end has warm feelings enough to melt the hardest of hearts in its satisfying conclusion. Matt Damon, Christopher Weiz and most especially Hong Chau as a feisty Vietnamese activist all rise to their respective roles in fine spirit and all in all make for a highly satisfying couple of hours of film viewing.
