The Gap into Vision: Forbidden Knowledge 19 - Chapter 13

Post by StevieG »

As Morn slowly comes to consciousness, she is aware that Nick is shaking her, in an obvious "killing rage". He insists that "they did something to him". Initially, Morn thinks that the Amnion have damaged her son in some way. Nick is now snarling to someone else "You cheated, you fucking sonofabitch. You did something to him". But as it turns out...
"Presumed Captain Nick Succorso, that is a false statement. The Amnion do not accept false statements. You charge a betrayal of trade. It is established that the Amnion do not betray trade. Your own tests will demonstrate that the offspring is human. The genetic identity is exactly what it was in the female's womb. Your statements are false."

Another fit of coughing tore at Nick's lungs. When he could talk again, he rasped, "Then why does he look like that?"

The alien conveyed a shrug. "Your question cannot be answered. Is there a flaw in the offspring's maturation? It is not apparent. Tests indicate no genetic defect. However, if you wish the offspring altered, that can be done."

"You bastard," Nick spat, nearly retching. "He doesn't look like me."

"Presumed Captain Nick Succorso," the voice explained with what may have been Amnion patience, "your genetic identity has no point of congruence with that of this offspring. He is not your - translation suggests the word 'son.' Therefore resemblance would be improbable."

Nick's silence was as loud as a shout.
As Morn struggles to eventually open her eyes, she has a look at her son, and...
Except for the mask over his mouth and the relative slightness of his build, he might as well have been Angus Thermopyle.
The only resemblance to Morn was his eyes - they were her colour, and full of dread. She realised that he needed her desperately, so she switched off her zone implant and rolled off the edge of the creche. Nick picked her up and flung her against the edge of the creche.
"Goddamn it! You put me through all this, and he isn't even mine! That's Thermopyle! He isn't even mine!"

Then he went down because Davies had come off the other creche and punched him in the back with all Angus' harsh force.
Davies is protective! He says "You're me." Morn tells him that that isn't true. She instructs him to trust her. Hearing Morn speak coherently, the Amnion are surprised (I suppose you could say).
"This does not conform to established reality," said the doctor. Morn heard strange cadences with one ear, language she knew with the other. "The procedure produces total and irreparable loss of reason and function. Analysis is required."
Nick is keen to get back to the ship, so they board the transport sled, and return to Captain's Fancy. The Amnion announce that departure will be delayed, which infuriates Nick.
"Presumed Captain Nick Succorso," replied the alien voice, "departure has been agreed. It will be permitted. Delay is necessary. Established reality is in flux. Events do not conform. Consideration is required. Departure will be postponed."
After some intense objections, Nick storms off toward his ship. Morn spends some time convincing Davies to follow. Davies is afraid and confused. Morn convinces him by promising to tell him everything, but for now...
Davies, listen to me. As far as I'm concerned, you're the second most important thing in the galaxy. You're my son." You're the part of me I need to believe in. "But the first, the most important thing is to not betray my humanity. As long as I've got life or breath to fight with, I won't let that happen to me. Or anybody else."
However, when they board Captain's Fancy, Nick instructs the crew to lock them both up, separately. Morn desperately tries to talk Nick out of that, saying the Davies needs her right now, otherwise he'll lose his mind. Of course, Nick doesn't care about that - in fact he would welcome it if it hurts Morn, which seems to be his primary aim right now.

Before they can be locked up, the Amnion send a message, announcing that they want to trade, and in order to complete the trade, they will send an Amnion emissary on board Captain's Fancy. Nick won't allow this unless they explain the trade further.
Enablement's reply was almost instantaneous. "The Amnion require possession of the new human offspring aboard your ship."

In that moment, Morn felt the bottom drop out of her heart.

Wheeling his seat, Nick swung around to face her. His eyes burned with malice and triumph. "Tell them," he told Scorz, 'Your emissary is acceptable.'"
Nick has found that most despicable solution to his desire for revenge.
"I don't really care that much about making you tell the truth," he said softly, almost sweetly. His mouth stretched tight over his teeth. "I prefer revenge. Something tells me you're about to find out what it costs when you lie to me."
Three significant events happen in this chapter:

1. Nick discovers that Morn's child is not his, sending him into a rage fuelled desire for revenge.
2. Morn does not lose her sanity due to the force-growth procedure, therefore the Amnion want to understand why.
3. The Amnion want Morn's son to complete their studies.

This chapter, and the last couple of chapters, are the points in the story where there's no possible way to put the book down! The Gap has come alive in a terrifying conclusion to this chapter.

Nick has certainly done a quick about-face, from feeling concerned for Morn losing her mind from having it copied, to this aggrieved state of rage. Nick doesn't even bother to first find out if Morn's mind is intact before he's grabbing and throwing her. He went from being her defender to being concerned for his legend in short order. The thoughts must be turning in his head, worrying about the story of "Nick Succorso the always-winning pirate went to forbidden space to have a child force-grown, because he was duped into believing it was his", and he's hating how that story is going to sound!

Great job, StevieG!   We can see that Morn has somehow come through with her mind intact, but we don't yet know how.

As for the Amnion wanting to study Davies, I fear that would not be a very pleasant experience for Davies. :hairs:

Oh, I quite agree! Without putting out spoiler information, I just want to say that the entire Gap story picks up for me from about this point in the story (give or take a chapter) onward.

Even though Davies is a stranger to the reader in this chapter, the text effectively gets me to sympathize with him. I think this is because of all the confusion and terror he's going through, sufficient to overwhelm anybody, especially an innocent like himself. And this is despite his strong resemblance to the abusive Angus.
The sight would have shocked her, if she'd been capable of shock. But her zone implant held her so close to blankness that she couldn't react to the image of the man who'd ravaged her flesh, shattered her spirit.

He was only an hour old, and already he appeared like a bloated toad, dark and brutal. His arms and chest were built for violence; he stood with his legs splayed as if to withstand the abuse of the universe. His penis dangled from his crotch, as ugly as an instrument of rape.

Only his eyes betrayed the heritage of his mother. They were Morn's color--and full of her dread.

His fear made him look as helpless as a child.

Davies Hyland. Her son.

Her mind in Angus' body.

He needed her. For him this moment was worse than it could ever be for her. He suffered everything that had ever terrorized her--but he had no zone implant.

His extremity gave her the strength to slide one hand into the pocket of her shipsuit.
And, of course, Morn is slipping her hand into her pocket to adjust the zone implant control to remain calm while having some energy to go forward.

The doctor cam to stand behind her and Davies. "You wish to be clothed," it said. "It is understood that humans require garments." One of its arms offered a shipsuit and boots made of a strange material that appeared to absorb light. "The frailty of human skin is conducive to fear. This is a racial defect, correctable by Amnion."

With a small shock, Morn realized that the doctor may have been trying to comfort Davies.

"Do it," she urged him softly. "Get dressed. We'll go back to Captain's Fancy. We can talk there."

Then she stepped back to show him that she could stand without his support.

I want to note that despite the feeling of the Amnion being creepy and sneaky, there is a real sense of honor among them, and perhaps even a sense of consideration about them. They are complicated, not simply villains. The "racial defect" remark might at first seem like an insult, but could just be an awkward problem with translation.

Forbidden Knowledge 19 - Chapter 13

Post by Cord Hurn »

I hope readers of the Watch will feel encouraged to post their thoughts on these chapters in the Gap books within the relevant chapter discussion threads we've created, no matter if it's months or years from now. The Watch has needed these threads as places for chapter discussions, in my opinion, and I'm pleased that we've gotten so far in dissecting Forbidden Knowledge.

Thanks to StevieG for the great opening thread, and thanks to Skyweir, Lord Foul, Effaeldm, and soon-to-be Avatar for helping me get this accomplished! We still have a little ways to go, I know, and probably won't get there until the middle of 2019, but the finish line is getting much closer!
