Joker
Just seen the first (proper) trailer for this film and it excites my curiosity more than anything I've seen in the superhero category for yonks. I think the role is almost made for Joachim Phoenix's special kind of insanity cum weirdness - a role he can really get his teeth into and build upon the solid foundations of Nicholson and Ledger before him, and if the trailer is anything to go by fans of'the dark side' of the genre are in for a treat. It would take a seriously bad director to fuck this up - let's face it, all you'd have to do is to loose Pheonix onto the set and give him his head for it to work - so the augers must be good. Bring it on I say!

Well, first off, Joaquim doesn't look like a fit for the Joker physiognomically.
Second of all, I hope that this teaser isn't showing his final Joker makeup, and is saving it for a surprise, because what I have seen isn't it. And that does seem like his final Joker outfit.
But that's the cosmetic stuff ... if you will.
I am always up for anything if it is done well. So it doesn't matter to me if this is the cannon origin story or if it's a what-if storyline from some comic or if it is a brand new "re-imagining". Art must follow it's muse. So I have no issues in that regard.
However, this teaser seems less of a super-villain origin story, and more of a psychological journey into the Heart of Darkness. It seems reminiscent of Falling Down. Or even Breaking Bad.
It may possibly end up being like the Marvelous Mrs. Maisel -- with guns.
The Ghost of Heath Ledger is going to haunt this. It will have to be something very unique and surprising, or else it'll suffer from the comparison.

So....there's no Batman in this movie? Has that already been stated somewhere because no one is talking about the lack of Batman anywhere online that I can see.
And the trailer is making it look like the Joker is a tragic figure.
I just want a psychopath Joker with no back story!

We just saw it today and, truthfully, I was pleasantly surprised--it had a good plot/script and a decent array of actors giving excellent performances.
In the last couple of weeks there were people warning of things such as "there will be violence at screenings of the movie" or "it glorifies the character and what he does". There were even many who were claiming that the movie itself would be "bad" for people to see since the protagonist is a marginalized white male who turns to violence.
Just like we continue to redefine our myths to explain/understand the current times--in the West our myths are superheroes--it is not a bad idea to reimagine or redefine their villainous opposition to explain/understand things going on in society. The number one question people ask after a high-profile shooting or some other trageday is "why?", followed quickly by "how?". Well, this movie is a means of trying answer those questions. Unlike Heath Ledger's portrayal of Joker--we know absolutely nothing about him, other than he just shows up and things start burning down--Jaoquin Phoenix's portrayal shows us *why* and also shows us who he is.
The audience should walk away understanding what can drive a person to extreme action even though they should not walk away viewing him as some sort of cult figure or a person to emulate. The movie does not glorify what he does, either, unlike the performances from Nicholson and Ledger--face it, the true main stars of those two movies was Joker.
There is a meme I mention every now and then: Cesar Romero was LSD, Jack Nicholson was Cocaine, Heath Ledger was Heroin, and Jared Leto was Meth. Jaoquin Phoenix is "psychiatric medications" (not any specific one, just the whole group).
Despite being set in 1982, there are several minor yet timely plot elements: class warfare (the wealth elites in Gotham versus the street-level poor people), random violence, bullying, mental illness, marginalization, and isolation. I do recommend seeing it--good to know that Mr. Phillips managed to surprise me with a film worth seeing.

I'm absolutely up for seeing the movie - but my last experience in my local cinema has totally put me off going to an auditorium, so will wait to see it at home. The reviews I've seen have been positive and if the film has been able to win Hashi over then so much the better!

I thought it was boring and just plain dumb.
I'm trying to remember now one memorable scene and I got nothing.

Well, I guess the clue's in the name. This has never sold itself as anything other than a stand alone piece....... I saw a review that said that this film could not be seen as part of the wider batman story; it simply isn't (it said) meant to be that. I respect HLT's position - it appears that he simply didn't like the film, stand alone or otherwise. But as Wayfriend points out above the Muse must be allowed to go where she will and to try to hammer the square peg of this film into the round hole of the Caped Crusader story is to invite disappointment.

Not even a hint. Well, a tiny hint...but the movie isn't about him.Savor Dam wrote:Hmmm.
So just as there is no Dorothy Gale (onstage, anyway) in Wicked, there is no Batman in Joker?
Pity.
Yes, this was adapted from a one-shot graphic novel designed to explore some of the aspects of "how" and "why" there is a Joker. Originally, Bob Kane--I think Kane created him--meant the Joker to be a one- or two-shot villain who subsequently dies--he would broadcast on radio that he was going to do something horrible, do it, and then be caught/killed. The character was so popular that they brought him back and a cultural meme was born.
