Godzilla King of the Monsters 2019

Post by aTOMiC »

Short and sweet...

Awesome Kaiju battles.
Idiotic plot, inane human dialogue.
Film's script must have read like an amateur fan fiction.
IMHO this film series deserves better.
Hopefully Godzilla vs Kong doesn't suffer with a similarly dim-witted story.

I was just about to post about this movie.

I thought it was awesome. It's far better than the previous movie. I was impressed that a movie about a lot of giant monsters fighting each other could be engaging at any level. But it was, and wildly so. I grinned through the whole thing.

There were many moments during the film that I felt the same way. When the music score unexpectedly paid homage to Godzilla's classic theme I had literally goosebumps like a 10 year old opening a Christmas present.
But when I paid any attention to the human character's motivations or realized how infantile the dialog was, it shook me awake like a bucket of cold water poured on my head. I know it runs afoul of tradition but I want my Godzilla film to rise above the script writing and directorial competence of a typical Transformers or Fast and Furious film.

I very much enjoyed it, although I hated the overuse of teal and orange. I can see where some of the criticism is coming from but it didn't really bother me.

I am a huge Godzilla fan but i must be losing my sense of childlike wonder at mindless spectacle.
I thought Gareth Edwards film had a professional competence but made a few critical mistakes by killing off Bryan Cranston's character, filling the plot with far too many coincidences regarding the main protagonist's involvement and constantly limiting Godzilla's screen time.
My hope was that the second film would continue the trend of competent film making and just tweak the level of kaiju action.
Instead it seemed the film maker's went all in with over the top human melodrama to the edge of farce. The ex machina air craft is consistent with the most over the top elements of 1970s Japanese Godzilla films but in so doing fractured the film's fragile hold on a realistic vibe.

Overall I actually did enjoy myself but that pleasure came at a price and the moment I switched my brain back on I felt a disappointment after the fact that you can read in my previous comments.

I saw it last weekend.
Huge fan.
Hated the 1999 one that shall not be named.
The Cranston one totally sucked.

But this was was great!
Fun and full of monsters.
Mothra kicked ass too!
The human element\story was toned down but still a little overdone\boring\pointless.

The last few minutes during the ending credits were interesting too.
They left the possibility for countless other stories.

And just for the record, Gamera could have kicked all those monster's asses.

Heh. Loved that Mr Spock could kick Darth Vader's ass comment at the end, HLT. 😁
