Guys, the Discord is not meant as a replacement to the Watch, it's a complement to it. It's just a big. modern, working Chat Bane.

(And yes, it is the easiest way to get hold of me. :D )

Join it.

Now.

(Also it is possible to create stand-alone threads in it, but AFAIK they're not permanent.)

ali, savor, and fist,

as Av says, discord is simply chat bane with voice capability.
it's easy to download and get on and it's fairly lightweight on the
computer.
you can text channel, voice channel, and in voice channel you can
turn your cams on and see each others beautiful faces.
we use it on WoW for raiding so that is why i already had it ages
before Av made the Watch channel.

But but but one of the beautiful things about the Watch is I don't have to show my face. ;)

I never used Chatbane, either.

Eh. I'll think about it.

You don't have to show your face. I just chat, I don't use the voice channels at all.

One of my issues with Chatbane, the one time I went in there, was that nobody was there. The BBS platform works much better for the sort of global community we are, with everybody strung out across time zones. Discord audio/video channels would have the same problem, right? You'd almost have to make an appointment to meet up with folks -- which works for gamers on a raid, but seems overly involved for casual conversation. I guess text messages would be okay, but why are they better than the Watch?

Does it sound like I'm a Luddite?

No, it works more like a BBS platform in terms of timing, if you are just chatting. You can jump in and comment even if everyone else is asleep or away when you look at our Discord channel.

And it's not better than the Watch, it's just an additional way to chat. Not a replacement.

Aliantha's point is fair, in that it points out that Discord is not like Chatbane so much.

It's really more like Slack. Which is really like a forum (in that there are channels and you post in them and when you connect you can catch up on messages you missed in channels you care about) crossed with texting ("posts" are you type something, add an emoji, and click Send).

Chatbane only let you view messages that arrived while you were connected. Discord messages are (AFAICT) forever, and you can see the ones you missed while you were away.

Lastly, Discord ALSO has voice-chat, which is nice when you need it, but don't think about that, that's aside from the stuff we really use.

Yeah, thanks, WF. I don't use Slack, either. (Just messing with you. The rest of your post helped -- thanks!)

Where do I sign up for this Discord thing? Is it an app to download or something? Can Mama Google find it for me? (Probably. She knows everything...)

Pretty sure there's a link to Discord in a thread stickied in this forum?

Yay! So, first go to discord.com, and create an account.

Once you have an account, click on the link in the first post of this thread. You'll only be able to see the Summonsing channel first, but post there and I'll give you the necessary permission to see the rest. :D

Do I really need to create a new Discord account or can I just automatically transfer over my account from here?

I don't know if anybody but Av takes care of it, so you might have to wait for him to wake up now.
