Its one o'clock and time for lunch,
When the sun beats down and I lie on the bench,
I can always hear them talk.
There's always been Ethel:
"Jacob, wake up! You've got to tidy your room now."
And then Mr Lewis:
"Isn't it time that he was out on his own?"
Over the garden wall, two little lovebirds
- cuckoo to you!
Keep them mowing blades sharp . . .

I know what I like, and I like what I know;
getting better in your wardrobe, stepping one beyond your show.
Sunday night, Mr Farmer called, said:

"Listen son, you're wasting time; there's a future for you
in the fire escape trade. Come up to town!"
But I remembered a voice from the past;
"Gambling only pays when you're winning."
- I had to thank old Miss Mort for schooling a failure.
Keep them mowing blades sharp . . .

I know what I like, and I like what I know;
getting better in your wardrobe, stepping one beyond your show.
I know what I like, and I like what I know;
getting better in your wardrobe, stepping one beyond your show.
When the sun beats down and I lie on the bench,
I can always hear them talk.
Me, I'm just a lawnmower-you can tell me by the way I walk
fall far and well Pilots!

I would have listed U2 (and they would have made my top 10) but they'd be real pissed to be listed under "British" 8)

Part 2, Hard to catagorize bands,

Ottmar Leibert and Luna Negra: Ottmar mixes classic flamenco guitar with Samba, Rhumba, Merenge and Bossa Nova rhythms and wanders off in his own unique New Mexican style (totally instrumental)-Solo Para Ti features two guest apperances by Carlos Santana. Your Ottmar primer: Nuevo Flamenco, The Hours Between Night and Day, Opium & Innamorare.+

The Mahavishnu Orchestra: The amazing John McGlaughlin on double neck guitar, Jan Hammer (yes the Miami Vice theme guy) on keyboards, Jerry Goodman on electric fiddle, Rich Laird on bass and Billy Cobham on drums. IMHO Billy Cobham is, along with Neal Peart, the best drummer in the world! This is very intense totally instrumental Jazz/Rock fusion with some small hints of classical. You must listen to Birds of Fire & The Inner Mounting Flame.+

The Gipsy Kings: Fantastic dancable rythms from a 5 guitar Spanish (Basque/Andeluvian) group who sing.

Some jazzy type bands with either such individual styles or worldbeat styles that it's hard to throw them in the jazz category:

The Pat Metheney Group+
The Rippingtons
Lee Rittenour
Return to Forever
Weather Report+

New Agey Recommendations:

George Winston+
Michael Hedges
David Lanz
Kitaro
Enigma
Deep Forest
Enya
Robert Whitesides Woo
Sunrise
William Ackerman+
Spyro Gyra
Tangerine Dream
Shadowfax

Amazing intrumental stuff from long ago--I can't really describe it---but if you don't listen to these two albums in your lifetime you will be seriously deprived (totally wild music that WILL make you dance):

Reveberi by Timer
Cruise Control by The Dixie Dregs

Native American Music:

R. Carlos Nakai (flute)
Robert Mirabal (flutes and damm good rock & roll)+
Willie Twofeathers (Shaman healing songs)+

Obscure but very good rock groups that kinda fell off the face of the earth,

Capt. Beefheart (they didn't fall off Foul's earth  )
The Nice
Rhinocherous
Atomic Rooster
Captian Beyond*
Armageddon* highly recommend the song Silver Tightrope
Dan Hicks and his Hot Licks
Kaptian Kopter and the Twirlybirds (guitarist Randy California from Spirit)
Vandergraff Generator*
Horslips
H. P. Lovecraft
Ultimate Spinach
Steeler's Wheel (Gerry Rafferty's old group)
Fairport Convention*
Renissance*+
Richie Havens (*famous as opening act at Woodstock)
Boz Scaggs*

*recommend

You can't go wrong with Zepplin, Pink Floyd, Yes, Rolling Stones, Genesis, Black Sabbeth and Deep Purple( Although have to say, saw them in concert last year when they were in London and was disappointed. Never a good sign when the main act gets out played by the support-Lynyrd Skynyrd in this case.) And Uriah Heep is a name I haven't heard in ages. Some of their stuff was good too :)

They're prob starting to get too old and in the way. I saw DP here during their Perfect Strangers tour (what was it? 6-8 years ago?) and Richie Blackmore tore the roof off! :R

Yeah maybe-although LS were all pretty old too! I think it was more because the line up had been changed so only a couple of the original members were on stage and they didn't seem to be that organised as a whole. It was good to see but not the best gig I have ever been to. You still can't beat some of the music they have made over the years though :)

danlo, you and Ur-Vile are so far the only other two people I know of around here who appreciate Big Country. This band has been so mislabelled, misunderstood and altogether ignored in North America that it's criminal. Big Country's time has passed, but it's at least nice to know that you (and Ur-Vile) have not forgotten them.

I'm with you on the Toms, danlo.

I actually had the elements song memorized at one time.
"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

The Indigo Girls' Rites of Passage is among my favorite albums ever.

Well Sgt. You're right that they are a US band and I was right originally--friends on different occasions convinced me they were from the UK. However, according to Wikipedia, Godsmack is Boston based and all it's members are from Mass.

H.P. Lovecraft
Their exotic name seemed rather fitting for the times. Taken from the deceased, cult gothic fantasy/horror writer of the early 20th century, Howard Phillips Lovecraft, Chicago's finest exponents of folk-rock are best remembered for their haunting musical tribute to the author's novella, the White Ship, the centrepiece on their brilliant debut album, released in late 1967. Like Lovecraft's writings, the group's music had a dream-like quality, encapsulating perfectly the peace-love vibe of the West Coast hippie scene.

Helmed by aspiring folk singer/songwriter, George Edwards, and classically trained keyboard player/singer, Dave Michaels, H.P. Lovecraft were a motley crew of talented musicians, formed in the spring of 1967. Yet, it was this diversity of musical backgrounds that also shaped the band's unique sound and set it apart from its contemporaries. In just a little under a year, H.P. Lovecraft produced two remarkable albums of musical ingenuity that stand as some of the finest pieces of music to emerge during the late 1960s acid-rock era. Sadly, H.P. Lovecraft never fulfilled their undoubted promise; the band's career derailed prematurely through a combination of poor management, internal frictions, exhaustion and substance abuse.-from the Mobius Strip webpage
