I think a novellette is a bit shorter than a novella, and a bit longer than a short story. I don't know the exact word count definitions, though.
I have read three of the books, the Simmons, the Bujold, and the Sawyer. All three were very good reads.
The Sawyer is the sequel (and middle book of a trilogy) of last year's Hugo winning novel, Hominids, which was also a very good read.
Of the three books I have read, I hope Dan Simmons's Ilium wins.
