Best Map of a World?

Post by Encryptic »

One thing that I'ved always liked about a fantasy book is when they include a good map of the world so you can get a handle on where places and characters are.

It's not necessary to the story, but I like to have some frame of reference so I know where "The Black Pit of Endless Doom" is located or or where "Joe The Mighty Warrior" is currently headed. I also just like looking at the map and reading the names of places to get an idea of what that place might be or what the name itself signifies/originates from. It makes the world seem more "tangible", rather than just a world described in words only if I have a map to refer to as well.

Of the maps I've seen in numerous books over the years, I personally have a fondness for the maps included with my copies of Terry Brooks' Shannara books. The maps of the Westland/Eastland included with Elfstones of Shannara and Wishsong of Shannara are two of the best ones I've seen. I don't know if they redid them for future editions, but the copies I have are very nicely drawn.

Your thoughts on this?

Personally, I like Karen Fonsted's Atlas of the Land, and hope to get her Middle Earth and Pern books as well. They go way beyond a simple map, showing details of several places in the Land, as well as Starfare's Gem and cool stuff like that.

Dragonlance and the land of Krynn has always been very detailed and organized, and the fact that I've read all the books, ALL of them, well it's a second home. Cheers.

I'm partial to: The Map of Ea in The Ea cycle books by Zindell, the map of the "Realm" in The Riddle Master of Hed trilogy by McKillip, map of Westeros (of course) in A Song of Ice and Fire by Martin, the maps in The Worm Oroborus and the Mezantium trilogy by Eddison, The Land and Middle Earth. 8) (I've never seen An Atlas of the Land, but I'm sure it's great too...)

The maps in Erikson's Malazan Book of the Fallen series are quite good, as is the aSoIaF map which d-Lo mentioned.

I wish you guys could see the world map for my new novel, it's size (in true measurement) is three times the size of the earth.

I'd go with Middle-Earth and Westeros as the best I've seen.

Best Westeros? I stayed at one of those; nice hotel, but if that's your definition of a continental breakfast, then I don't want to live on your continent.

I think dAN's map of the land of Bishop's Prophecy it the best map I've ever seen. He should be given an award.

The maps of Middle Earth are just beautiful in the red leather collector's edition of The Lord of the Rings. Full color and they fold out. Just awesome! :D :D
And I believe in you
altho you never asked me too
I will remember you
and what life put you thru.
