It's weird. I would've thought the inhabitants of the Land would be vegetarians. It would fit with the Oath of Peace, their use of wood and all. Perhaps there's room for animal lore... you know, a few deep, unintelligible words sung to a cow and it gives you a tenderloin or something then walks away.

As a vegetarian myself, I tend to agree with you. But I think it's probably more a case of slaughtering the animals quickly and painlessly, and holding a simple ritual to thank them for their gift of food.

Plus it's something that SRD probably just didn't think about.

Maybe the animals were made of tofu?

I thought I'd bump this thread to complement Myste's about paper in the Land.

The problem of paper seems not nearly as troubling as the question of where Landfolk get their meat from. Syl makes a very good point here. The people of the Land aren't just lovey-dovey vegetarians, eh?

Maybe they just said it was beef, but it was really Cavewight. There'd be less objection to killing them, but nobody'd want to eat it, so they called it beef.

Certainly not. Triock was a Cattleherd, after all. You don't suppose he did it as an exercise in veterinary philanthropy, do you? Helping little old cows cross the road out of the Boy Scout goodness of his heart? Didn't think so.

And I'm here to tell you, beef cattle may just be the only form of animal life that is more sentient after being slaughtered and eaten. Those critters can barely outwit grass.

(If you interpret this to mean that I consider eating beef morally neutral, you're right. Eating chickens, on the other hand, is positively virtuous. Chickens are not only stupid, they're mean. The blighters deserve all they get!)

I imagine there's some sort of expression of gratitude when food animals are slaughtered in the Land. Maybe they don't go as far as thanking the spirit of the cow, but I can't imagine them eating anything that comes from the Earth without acknowledging the gift. Look at how they eat aliantha.

What? After you eat a platefull of meat you just throw a handful of cattle bones over your left shoulder?
