Tales set in late 17th century?

Post by Durris »

My husband and I have been on a "films set in the 17th century" kick for a couple of weeks; we saw first "Vatel," about a chef to some noble in Louis XIV's time, then the new version of "The Man in the Iron Mask" (a substantial epic of friendship and heroism under the guise of a fluffy swashbuckler), then "Girl with a Pearl Earring," which imagines the story behind Vermeer's 1665 painting (the cinematography is ravishing--every scene has Vermeeresque lighting!)

Can anyone recommend fantasy short stories or novels set in this period?

Durris, Dave Duncan's King's Blades series is set in a fantasy world around that time-frame. These are cleverly written swashbucklers. Magic plays a role, but honor and intrigue and adventure are the main ingredients. The historical background is well rendered. The first novel is entitled The Gilded Chain.

For straight historical fiction, try Dorothy Dunnett's Lymond Chronicle. First book, The Game of Kings.
