When I first read this news I was excited. Then Enterprise began to seep into my thoughts and I began to feel sick to my stomach. There are about a million reasons to make a film based on the Romulan/Federation war but in my opinion Enterprise has unalterably damaged my perception of the continuity of Star Trek history. Will they honor the established past? Or will they further pollute our understanding of Star Trek lore by giving us their "version" of events. I feel uneasy about this new news. I guess we'll learn more in the near future.

I tend to agree with you, OD. I don't know who should take over exactly. Maybe Nicolas Meyer or Johnathan Frakes or maybe someone I'm not thinking of.Old Darth wrote:If Berman is attached I don't care what they decide to do. The franchise needs new blood not more Berman!

I'm surprised that they're talking about another Trek film so soon after the very mediocre box office performance of ST: Nemesis. Shouldn't that have been a hint to Paramount that fans (like me) are either burnt out or fed up with the current state of Star Trek? Are they just asking for another box office disappointment? I want to be enthusiastic about Star Trek, but to me, the franchise seems lifeless right now.
A story about this Romulan/Federation conflict might be interesting, but I think Paramount seriously needs to give it a rest for a few years. Considering the efficiency with which they can crank out the Trek films, I figure that if Berman or whomever is already plotting the next one, then it could well be in production full-swing this fall or winter...in time for, say, a summer release next year. But this hypothetical Trek film would then be going up against Star Wars Episode III and Indiana Jones 4. Would the Romulans and the Federation be a match for the tag team of Lucas and Spielberg? Maybe...maybe not. Just a fun conjecture.
Oh, and I second TOM's recommendation to put Nicholas Meyer in charge of Star Trek. But not Jonathan Frakes. Noooooooooooooo...!

I agree with all of your comments, MM.Matrixman wrote: Oh, and I second TOM's recommendation to put Nicholas Meyer in charge of Star Trek. But not Jonathan Frakes. Noooooooooooooo...!

Regarding Frakes. I enjoyed First Contact and Frakes demonstrated an understanding and handling of the material that felt very comfortable to me in the STNG format. (His handling of the weaker story of Insurrection is up for debate.) Meyer is without question, in my mind, the best candidate to re capture the proper feel and direction of any existing or forthcoming Star Trek properties.

NO, it's a terrible idea! The only way the Romulans should've ever been used in a movie would have been to reunite them with the Vulcans. That should've been the focus of the last ST movie, instead of some hokey "I'm Picard's clone" premise.
ST badly needs new blood with new creative ideas. Short of that, I say let the franchise rest in peace.
