Donaldson Interview

Post by MarkJeffrey »

Hello all ...

I just discovered this site yesterday and been reading the boards ... I was excited to read that SRD is in the middle of writing the first book of a third trilogy ... hopefully this is in fact that case :)

Anyway, Donaldson is one of my top three favorite authors and read all six books multiple times in my teens, and in 1997 I had a rare chance to interview him. I had started an internet company called The Palace (still up at www.thepalace.com) and we had a brand new auditorium chat feature at the time we were promoting with Microsoft's Netshow product ... so I took the opportunity to get a hold of SRD and get him online. Basically, it was pretty cool to have a "legitimate" excuse to get SRD live on the phone from New Mexico and shoot the shit with him for a couple hours :) haha pretty trippy! Anyway, here is the transcript saved by another Covenant-head named John Eccker who helped run the event:

www.eccker.org/johnf/sep97chat.htm

He (SRD) is definitely a slow-speaking, deep thinking kind of guy on the phone .. very interesting dude as you all might imagine, lots going on upstairs. He's one of my childhood author-heroes so that certainly colored the experience a bit. :) But one thing was clear: you could hear Covenant and Linden and some of the others in the way he spoke, those voices were clearly a part of him -- you could "feel" their presence in the conversation, hard to describe - but having spent so much time with those personalities in the books growing up, it was weird to talk with source of those of personalities and distinctly feel them knocking around in between the words.

Anyway - enjoy the interview and be careful of getting hit by police cars while paying your phone bills in person! :)

I stumbled across that one before. Good interview.
"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

Mark Jeffrey: Who is Thomas Covenant? Is he you?

Of course not, and of course yes. But I would defy someone to track this down. I have never said "Hellfire and bloody damnation." And I do not have leprosy.
This made me laugh.

Great interview. Thanks for posting it. :)
