Haruchai

Well then...

I think it's high time the Haruchai started doing their own will, rather than protecting and following. But HOLY COW!!!!! Buncha wackos!!!! Serving Corruption, indeed!!!! That they can't see the glaringly obvious flaw with their plan, which Linden points out nicely, is... I don't know what to call it. I suppose we'll have to blame it on the fact that it's the first time we're aware of that they did not put someone else's will above their own. Just too inexperienced at decision-making I guess.

But I'm very happy the Haruchai are still the physical perfection that we've come to know and love. Stave's fights, his way of ignoring pain that might outright kill anyone of another race, the way he runs effortlessly up the mountain while carrying Linden, the way he ignores the cold... Ah, it's a beautiful thing!!! :D

Interesting that SRD is showing us so much of what the Haruchai can perceive with the health sense. I always figured that, in the 2nd Chrons, they simply walked around without knowing that others had to be on stone during sunrise, and nothing happened. But now it seems possible that they knew what was about to happen, understood that it would not bother them, and just went about their business. Amazing how well they can see, even through Kevin's Dirt!

Still physical perfection, but oh so childlike.

I liked the interplay between the Haruchai and the Ramen: unyielding opinion on one side, unyielding opinion on the other. Can you say "stalemate"? Except for Stave...

I hated that... it was so annoying. :?

How about this, Darth - we'll just assume you hated everything about the book unless you say otherwise. 'k? Saves you time and effort, instead of writing "I hated..." for everything. Mr. Grumpy! Sheesh!

I agree. I think now that Stave has declared whose "side" he's on, the bickering will go down a bit. Maybe. We're stretching it a bit.... :? I swear they're like children. I can see some kind of spoof where they're related and arguing like brothers and sisters. Oi...

I think Mahrtiir's reaction sums up my feelings about these "Masters" the best.
Mahrtiir hesitated. His desire for battle burned like the fires which lit the Close. But he heard Linden--and respected her judgment. Growling, "sleepless ones", as though the words were an obscenity, he returned to her side. With a brusque wave of his hand, he motioned the Cords back to their seats.
What the Haruchai did to the people of the Land IS an obscenity as far as I'm concerned. Denying anyone knowledge of their past is such. And now, with new evils on the Land, Lord Foul being only one now, this obscenity is going to cost the people of the Land direly.

Yup. And the Masters don't even care! As long as they live and die by their principles. I don't have Runes with me right now, so I don't have the quote. But something like, "When we die, the people of the Land may fight Corruption in whatever manner they choose." Yeah, right. Loser. Now that you've made sure they don't know what options are available to them! :x Their basic idea was very Mhoram-ish, not judging themselves by whether they won or not, but they sure took a wrong turn with it!

I don't remember where I saw it, but someone said something along the lines of "they always had someone to follow, but now that there aren't any Lords to follow, they have to make their own decisions." It may be that they were trying to follow Mhoram's example, but like Fist and Faith said, they didn't quite do that... :?

They've been following the Lords words for...what? thousands of years? then they didn't really have anything to do with the Land for about 3,000, THEN they pretty much run events of the Land?? Misguided Leadership indeed. The Haruchai may live too much in the past and past mistakes. While it's important to learn from mistakes, it's also important to not let the past rule the future.

Somehow I think those caesures will play a role in that...

Oh yeah! maybe Bannor, one of their own legends, will come from the past and tell them what a bunch of pansies they're being  "Tell them" in true haruchai style, of course - ie. a good kicking

The actions of the present day Haruchai (Masters) were shocking to me. The former Haruchai were very strict and judgemental about their own decsions and actions. But to basically decide the fate of the land using their inflexible standards! Holy Crap, the implications are astounding. The poeple of the Land have always been rich with history, song, and tales of past triumphs and even defeats. Even the Sunbane people of the Land had their own customs and history, even though it was false. The Masters have turned the current people of the Land into ignorant, simple people with no sense of culture, no history of their ancestors, no sense of danger from the one true enemy they have and thats Lord Foul.

I have one thing to say.

IT'S ALL THOMAS COVENANT'S FAULT

Okay, not all, but he is the one who told the Haruchai to take care of Sunder and Holland and child since they were the future of the land. He even said this after the fight in Revelstone when eveyone was caring for the people of Revelstone. He should have known that the Haruchai are addicted to fearsome vows. (Bloodguard, anyone?) And so the Haruchai took Covenant's words to the extreme.

So....

Are all Haruchai sleepless? The Ramen called them Sleepless Ones, but I wasn't sure if they were referring to the Bloodguard and using an old insult since the Bloodguard were the epitome of what they hated in the Haruchai, or if they really all don't sleep... ?

All in all, I agree with that. The Haruchai's main fault is that they take things extremely literally.

No, the Haruchai DO sleep. It was just the Bloodguard held by their Vow that did not. It is meant as an insult to them, even though the Masters couldn't care less what they are called.

The Haruchai did not sleep in the 2nd Chronicles. It was not just the Vow per se; instead it seems that they can forego sleep at will.

Maybe it's in reference to their "collective thought".
I don't have the book in front of me but...
In the One Tree while they were guest of the Kemper and Lady Alif(?) put Brinn(?) to sleep with that powder the other Haruchai who were sleeping were "roused" when they lost contact with thier fallen Haruchai comrades.

While Haruchai is awake anywhere in the world they do not sleep.
Maybe the Ramen are aware of this collective ability.

Hows that for a stretch?
:)
