What's the common denominator here at KevinsWatch?
I was just thinking about this - what is the one thing that we all have in common? I don't mean something as obviously simple as "we all like SRD."
Think about it - we have people here from all over the world. There are those who are religious and those who are atheists. We have people who are of a conservative bent when it comes to politics, and some who are very liberal. There are people of all ages, and it seems that we have an fairly equal distribution of the genders.
We share our lives and our families, and support each other through hard times. I've never found anything like that on any other message board.
So, what is it about this particular board? Is there some unifying theme to the members here? Or, is this a rhetorical question which can't be answered?

I think that we are all seekers--we may not all be seeking the same thing--but I think it is true.
I think that the common denominators would be that we are all thinkers.
We are all quite creative and imaginative.
I think we are all quite accepting of others and that we are moderately accepting and satisfied with who we are turning out to be in this world.
I think all of us must have a rampaging, hyperactive inner child as well...
I don't know about this next bit, but I wonder if everyone here has had some powerful hurt in the past that makes us a little afraid to throw ourselves into real life with the same abandon that we throw ourselves into our cyber lives.
Maybe I am just projecting everything.
I dunno.
That's my 75 cents worth, anyhow.

There's been sex and foul language, though minimal by most msg board standards. Not so much recently, however. It wasn't until Zeph and Severian came around that we started to be a "family board." I still have my misgivings about the whole PG bit, but it's trivial.
I'm afraid to say it, but the common denominator is definately SRD. It's not that we have all read SRD. If that was the case, we'd have thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of members. No, we read Donaldson and we sought out a community of people that also read him. There was something about his writing, something about us, that made us want to belong to people who subscribed to the themes or beliefs put forward in his books (predominantly, The Chronicles).
One of those themes, as mentioned upthread, is something that Donaldson hit on in the GI. I wish I had the time to get the quote. Basically, everyone has to deal with pain at one point or another. What distinguishes Donaldson fans is how we choose to respond to that pain. We either choose or wish to choose a response that makes something out of it. And I believe we make a specific response to find others of the same mind to work together, either to help us overcome our own problems or to help each other build something we want to see exist.
In that way, I see Kevin's Watch as a Tower of Babel of hope, we keep building and building...

"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

Excellent post, Syl! But I have to say the reason I came here, and still visit here, is because I seek good conversation, not empathy or belonging. Well, that's me, anyway.
