The Dragonriders of Pern
Has anyone read Anne McCaffrey's series, the Dragonriders of Pern or the HarperHall of Pern? I just love those books! They're on the same shelf as TC and the Land.
Re: The Dragonriders of Pern
I have read most of the early Anne McCaffrey books. Including the Dragon-books up to "Masterharper" which I did not read.Turiya Foul wrote:Has anyone read Anne McCaffrey's series, the Dragonriders of Pern or the HarperHall of Pern? I have also read most of the other early McCaffrey works like "The ship who sang" and "Pegasus in flight".
All of them are good, but there are only a few of them that are really great as I remember them now.

You know...I NEVER have, but this is weird...either in elementary school or middle school one of my lit books had a short story (or maybe an excerpt) from one of those Dragonlance books or whatnot. Had something to do with a kid wanting a gold dragon, but everyone said he was going to have a worse color, but he wound up getting the best? I hardly remember it, okay, because it has been nearly a decade!

I read the Dragon Riders of Pern several years before TCTC. Was one of my Favorites for its detail and characters. The books after the original Two I did not find as interesting, too stretched I guess. Have always objected to sequels as often they do not contain the depth of exploration associated with the original. the 2nd TCTC set is one exception.

you know what book messed me up as a kid? i think it was called Heart's Blood (from what i remember, basically Ben Hur but with dragons). The first book, which i believe was called Dragon's Heart, was made into a little cartoon movie i saw one saturday morning. eventually i found the book, read it, got the sequel.
i don't want to spoil the ending, in fact i barely remember it, but all i can say is; that's what i remember, anyway.

remember the ton-ton in empire strikes back? well, instead of the ton-ton, it was a dragon, and the dragon was the dude's best friend. then the dude was turned into a dragon by sleeping in his warm carcass.

yes you are talking about JY's Pit Dragon series...I saw the cartoon too, instead of a final strike style throat slashing they changed it to a less graphic horn-breaking at the end of a fight. And the Anne McCaffrey books are really good. Anyone ever read the Elvenblood/Elvenbane series? Dragons and halfbloods and elves and stuff? I think Anne McCaffrey worked in collaboration with someone on it maybe....There were three books in that first sereis by the way...

Dragonrider Series
Excellent YA ("young adult," or teenager) introduction to fantasy/science fiction. But very different from Covenant, which I put squarely in the adult/literature category.
