The figurative landscape was and is populated by more than those already brought to discussion.
There are the common folks, the downers, etc. From Lena to Liand there is a consistent level of innocence portrayed. Sure, as I recall, there is some flucuation, but overall they seem to me an innocent lot. There is always a large portion of Thomas’es burden borne by these characters.
The Lords struck me as The conscience;. Keepers of the Lore. The aware decision makers o f the Land. They certainly differed amongst them selves. Each Fallible. The closest personage we have in Runes, to the Lords is Anele.
The Giants…well..only a long winded tale would do them justice. So many aspects, but , all on the positive, good, I mean,,I couldn’t help but have Salt Heart as a favorite character. Also, the Giant “ character” is an exaggeration, a figurative. So, what is so positive and good, creative , ever searching, etc, and looms large in the interior, at least in the author’s perspective?. I suggest,” Compassion.”.There is a unselfish understanding, feeling, nuanced by appreciated beauty in their expressions; the stories they told, the Revelstone they built, their home Seareach. Etc…Its difficult for me to believe that they won’t be making an appearance in the Last Chrons .IMHO, they have something Linden could learn abit of.
And perhaps even larger on the interior figurative scale is the Elohim. There has been great posts on the literal, and here I suggest an opinion on the figurative, the analogous, the metaphorical,,and I base my opinion on the authors words only mentioned once or so in the 2nd Chrons and once in the Last…they only come around when foreseen events beckon their need. In other words,, when everyday life is okie dokie, smooth sailing, a “ good” day that all insist you and I have..they are not around. When the seas are choppy, heck, when a hurricane is blowing in, who are you going to call? Careful..its not the “ who” part , but it’s the act of calling when turmoil comes along uninvited. The Elohim represent “ Spiritualality” ,,They know their mission and its their Wurd to fulfill the need no matter what it may cost the individual Elohim. A Elohim isn’t God, nor the whole Lot of Them is God, but as a group, when they recognize the Times –a- Comin, they interject at the scale of Large Impact. We start beseeching when the sheet starts heetin the fan.
Again, like “Giants” the author gets you close by the descriptive he uses. Remember, this is the Interior Figurative Landscape.. Beyond the Elohim, we find The Creator. Much discussion here, and what I see as deliberate obfuscation by the author on this one. Just as it should be. The Creator is and should remain mysterious. ..MEL
