So Who Taught the Land's People how to Survive Post Sunbane?

Post by KaosArcana »

The Haruchai are guarding Revelstone, not protecting the
people of the Land.

The Waynhim don't seem to have much contact with human
beings, and can't speak human languages.

So who teaches the people of the Land how to grow food that
takes weeks or months to grow? Who teaches them how to deal
with winter?

It will be tough, but I think if you can survive the sunbane, you can survive anything.
"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

Good point. Sunder and Hollian anyone?
Can they leave Andelain?

Also, did their transformation automatically give them
knowledge of the seasons and the normal growing cycle?

Hm, good point. The Clave is no more. Sunder and Holian are kinda, well, you know, in lala land. I'd guess the giants are the best bet. Good ol' Pitchwife and the First. Pitchwife rules.-jay

Also, there are (presumably) two score Giants on Starfare's Gem off the coast of the land at the end of WGW.

I agree the Giants seem the best bet.

I mean, they do have Barry Bonds...oh wait - this isn't the sports forum

That would seem a strange twist, or maybe a similar tale, depending on how you look at it. The Giants survived the RoD to re-establish life with Kevins first ward - they would be the perfect choice to do it again. IMHO :D

There's no reason to think that the Haruchai wouldn't give them pointers. They are pretty hearty, but they have to eat something. Even if they didn't actually tell people what to do, the people could watch and learn.

I don't think the people will ned any outside assistance. The sunbane warped the natural cycles of the land but did not alter the fundamental nature of life nor the skills required to live i.e. the ability to gather food and create shelter. The elimination of the sunbane removes some of the hurdles that made life difficult i.e. torrential rains followed by horrific drought, unontrolled growth then decay. IMHO, the people of the land are intelligent and adaptive enough to realize that sowing and reaping will be a longer process but a more reliable one. The extremes of weather will no longer threaten them.

I think it was Sylvanus who said that if they could survive the sunbane they could survive anything and I believe that it's essentially true. Life post-sunbane will be a cake walk compared to the hell the people of the land were in.
War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself. John Stuart Mill
