What would you do?

Post by birdandbear »

"The call to adventure," so dubbed by Joseph campbell, is an ancient universal theme dating back to the very beginnings of human storytelling. Characters from the Frog Prince to Merlin, to Allanon, to Roland of Gilead, have enacted this call to spiritual change.
But let's forget all that for now and think about this literally.
What would you do if, for example, a strangely dressed man popped out of your mirror one night in the middle of Buffy, and asked you to come with him and help him save his world?

Once upon a time, my own answer would heve been a resounding and unequivocal "How do we get there?" But alas, now it would have to be closer to "How long will we be gone?" and "Can you wait while I find a babysitter?"

*sigh* :( :x  :D

Actually, if I was sitting down one evening, minding my own business, and someone popped out my mirror, I'd be tempted to run, grab a weapon of some sort, or question my sanity :)

If they wanted me they'd have to take my kids, too. Period. No discussion.

It would be interesting, certainly, but I do not know if I would go anyway. Depends on my mood I think.

HA HA HA!

Actually, you'd think that would be any normal persons initial reaction. It always struck me as kind of odd that Terisa never evinced any of these reactions. Oh, she had a halfhearted thought or two about calling security -and she was certainly surprised - but she never once questioned the reality of the situation, or even felt any fear. That's just odd. Especially in comparison with the Unbeliever.

Yep, I'd be making an appointment with a shrink and gettin' some of the good stuff.

I also couldn't just take off into some magical land of danger and excitement and leave my wife and kid behind.
"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

I think that's because Terisa is a basically passive individual who felt herself to be powerless. Also, don't forget, she had that dream the night before, and Geraden looked like the person in her dream.

Mm, I'd probably question my sanity if someone popped out of my mirror...

But if the person somehow managed to convince me that he wasn't a figment of my imagination, I'd probably go with him. At least to get away from Buffy.

Now, if he came in the middle of 24, that'd be another story...

The inside of the wardrobe at home has scratch marks from repeated attempts to hope that something might be in there.

Yeah, I reckon I'd go. Not without some fear, though.
