Its one of my favorite books. ITs exceedingly creepy and as you said don't read it alone at night.
It happened in my home state of WV too.
"We do not follow maps to buried treasure, and remember:X never, ever, marks the spot."
- Professor Henry Jones Jr.
"Hither came Conan, the Cimmerian, black-haired, sullen-eyed, sword in hand, a thief, a reaver, a slayer, with gigantic melancholies and gigantic mirth, to tread the jeweled thrones of the Earth under his sandalled feet."
That book is so well done... very convincing. Mainly, I think, because he seems to be a big skeptic as well... disregarding anything remotely explainable.
Still not sure how I feel about it... I'm always cynical of people who change their ideas because of one book or viewpoint. My friend is an athiest because of The Da Vanci Code (an exceedingly stupid reason, I know. )
I'm excited to watch the movie! I've never seen it. Should be creepy!
The movie is also very creepy but it is a screenplay so much of the book is avoided in the story. There is a character in the movie who seems to represent John Keel too. I must say that I am a fan of the movie.
Keel has published several other books on the paranormal. He is an interesting writer but others have written about the Mothman and a similar creature called the Flatwoods monster.
Without a doubt something very bizarre happened in Point Pleasent. Lots of theories have surfaced about the events but I like Keel's take the best.

Thought-provoking idea....
I really like the MIBs and the strange phone calls. Nothing seems to creep out more now than a late night call...shudder

The strangest part for me was looking back at the end of the book and wondering why that course of events happened at all. It seems like Keel and the rest were just puppets who couldn't stop anything but were told anyway just to antagonize them.
Crazy stuff indeed.

Had all that happened to me... them sending him messages to hotels he thought he picked at random and such... it would really make me question the idea of free will.
You still haven't seen the movie, right?
Its got a few great parts that parallel those events. Freakin' terrifying...

I really enjoyed the movie. The book's on my "to read" pile.

The way you folks are talking about this book has me intrigued. Did I miss a good horror movie? I avoided it because I thought it was just another Richard Gere stinker.
The book is superior to the movie in content but the movie captures some of its spirit. It has a very psychological approach that never lets you get a grip so to speak. I highly recommend the book.

I was looking over my copy of the book and remember the creepiest part; the stuttering MIB. Just try to do the voice in your head, better yet use Cold's voice from the movie in your head!...shudder...

It's hard to imagine how they'd make a sequential movie out of the book... there are so many little pieces that need to fit together. I guess I'll see soon enough, I'm going to try to rent it within the next two days.
BTW - what page is the stuttering MIB on? I can't remember that part clearly enough...
I thought the movie was actually pretty good. I usually avoid most horror films, as they seem to focus more on stomach turning gore than in trying to scare people. This one played with your head, and you have to watch it more than once to get all of the little details (most of which are never explained, like the slowly growing blot on the side of that one house).
And of course, being able to watch the Silver Fox is never a hardship.
Page 13,
I recommend you read the book Duchess. Its in pb and about 250 pages so you'll finish it in a night or so. Very creepy and supposedly a true, not "based" on true but exaggerated, events

The movie definately got the mood right, but I think because the book was so much better (and I just finished it) I didn't like the movie as much as it's worth.
Best part was definately Mr. Cold!
I wish they had more about the MIB... and all the glowing likes in the sky... and more mothman!! Lanulos wasn't mentioned... that was my favorite part. But for the most part it was pretty good.
I thought this one of the most under-rated horror flicks. Really excellent, full of creepiness and genuine as opposed to faux drama.
Of course what I was left with was the idea that perhaps the Mothman--or Mothmen--have different agendas rather than all one. I also wondered if what they were in general "offering" was not so much knowledge or suffering but experience.
