Ong Bak and Kung Fu Hustle

Post by [Syl] »

Rented these last week, and I'm finally getting around to writing about them.

Ong Bak was great (I think someone else has mentioned it, but I didn't see it). I haven't had that much fun watching an action movie since Rumble in the Bronx (back before Chan got all Hollywood), maybe even since watching my first action flicks as a kid. The plot is fairly predictable, but it isn't bad. And you're not watching it for the plot. Great stunts and some great fighting.

Kung Fu Hustle. If you've seen Shaolin Soccer, you know what to expect. I don't think it's as consistently funny (there's a big stretch of serious-type kung fu plot towards the end), but there are some moments that had me in tears.

Interesting that you should mention these. They were just written about in our local paper this week:

New School, Old School, and some kung fu classics

Couldn't have said it better.
"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

I hadn't intended to see either of these, but I might now.

Kung Fu Hustle was good, but I think Kung Pow is better. *runs*

Interesting fighting style - terrible story and acting.
