this found The Esmer, and well, to say the least he was, well, moved......"believe" it or not..... ;) .....and wished to share it with all of you....doesn't open up your media player, just plays in the background in the page! sweeeeet! Makes a great favorite, for when you "need" it......


Although everyone is welcome to listen, of course, I wanted this to be for people who believe in Jesus to come and listen to the song by a man who was a strong believer himself, as I admire his repentance and faith. It was a nice twist to hear the song finally sung by a man who actually believed the words he was singing, not a veiled stab at the hypocrisy of some people's views and attitudes about Jesus. It spoke to me, and I just wished to share it with those who "need a little" now and then. At least thats what I hear in it. ;) (audio)(thanx, Syl ;) )

it's a Depeche Mode song, just to give proper credit. and Marylin Manson did it as well, I believe.

I doubt it's Cash's own lyrics. As far as I can remember almost nothing on the American recordings albums were his own work.

Further, "Personal Jesus" does not sound or feel like any of his own (earlier) work, although he may have changed style from those earlier records.

Depeche Mode (Gore/Wilder) wrote the words and music.
The track is off the Violator album.

I like Cash's version, but the Depeche Mode original is better.

I like Cash's version because he actually took the song and "made it real". I hear a touch of "snidery" coming from Gore and from Manson especially, Johnny took it in his beautiful, simple way and took a "jab" and made it a "hug"..........took a song "about" faith and made it into a song "of" faith, and thats where the power comes from, for me...... ;)

plus this just pops up and starts playing without the need to fire up the ole media player, which i think is "cool" 8)

I have not heard either of the other versions, but I do not doubt that the Cash version is the best. :)

In fact, many, if not most, of Cash's hits have been other people's work. Including one of my own favorites "Sunday Morning Coming Down".

It's not bad, but it's not spectacular either (and I like Cash). Some of the lines he sings does add a little depth by the rough around the edges tone, but a couple of the lines fall pretty flat. "Hurt" was a much better cover.

Whatever you want to find in the song, that's cool, but a lot of other people aren't going to see it the way you do. To many, it's not about Jesus but a Christ figure.

my apologies, Syl, I should have made my intentions clearer if thats what I had wished to accomplish. I agree the post is vague but I thought it "implied" that it was for people who believed in Jesus to come and listen to the song by a man who was a strong believer himself, as I admire his repentance and faith. and funny enough, it was the flatness and roughness you mentioned that I love about it. "no frills" one take raw shot. Sometimes that works in a song, take Roy Harpers voice cracking in "Have A Cigar", it just wouldn't be the same song without it, ya know? ;)
