Why a last chronicles....

Just musing on why SRD is doing a last Chronicles.

My conclusion is that he came across this website, read the forums and thought "Hells Bells, so many unanswered questions. I'll have to do something about that!"

Actually, he said in a 97 interview that a last set of books was always in the back of his mind. It's just taken him a while to get around to them. In the preface to one of his books, he talks about his writing cycle - novel(s), short stories, mysteries. I think that it just came time to write epic fantasy again, and those books that were churning in the back of his mind came forth.

Donaldson has to remain very focussed when he's writing. If he browsed through this site, he'd never get anything onto paper. Too many ideas, questions, etc. to process. I sometimes feel overwhelmed myself!

Which work was that? Silmarillion? Or the Morgoth's Ring thing he wanted to do but never did? I don't think the Professor had another Lord of the Rings up his sleeve!

He didn't finish the Silmarrilion, and he had a lot of others he wanted to get finished too, I believe...plus, Duchess informs me that he had a LOTR sequel going, but stopped...something like that?

Well, I read a part of the supposed sequel on the internet, but that doesn't mean that it was real! the person said that it was, but who knows? It was set in Gondor under the reign of King Aragorn's son...there were only a few pages, and it seemed pretty dark...we need Foamy or Bannor or another Tolkein expert here, one of them would probably know whether or not it was the real deal!

I remember reading a page or two of that work. It was set about 180 years after LOTR. Young boys were mocking the elders stories of the Orcs and were kind of malicious themselves. The Silmarillion was an organic work - it was constantly changing as Tolkien himself changed during his life. I do recall reading that Tolkien was reworking the Silmarillion, towards the end of his life, to give Galadriel a much greater role. She was to be the equal of Feanor, in abilities, without his overwealming pride.
