Ah, so Stoner Rock is what it's called. Does this mean I should ingest certain hemp plant products in order to get the full effect of the music?
The only band on the list that I've listened to is Monster Magnet. I was introduced to their music via "Look To Your Orb For The Warning" that was on the Matrix soundtrack. Loved that song! Subsequently bought the band's Dopes To Infinity CD and enjoyed it overall, though I haven't listened to it in a while. I can only take this kind of music in small doses, and I probably shouldn't operate any heavy machinery afterwards.

Sorry, Sarge, Meat Puppets don't really fit.
I thought about putting Clutch in there, but as much as I love 'em, only a few of their songs, *cough Spacegrass cough* really fit into the SR category.
Heh, if that was the case, MM, I woulda had some explaining to do over my piss tests the last few years (stupid Navy). Some of the SR musicians do take a little umbrage at the title, which is why Homme refers to it as desert rock and some people try not to classify it at all (it could easily be called psychadelic, sludge, or doom depending on the band).
Heh, I bought Power Trip when Space Lord first came out. Didn't come back to it for years later.

"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

i can see that.

you're more advanced than a cockroach,
have you ever tried explaining yourself
to one of them?
~ alan bates, the mothman prophecies
i've had this with actors before, on the set,
where they get upset about the [size of my]
trailer, and i'm always like...take my trailer,
cause... i'm from Kentucky
and that's not what we brag about.

all right with me.
Homegrown
is the way it should be.
Homegrown
is a good thing.
Plant that bell
and let it ring. (enter fiddle)
The sun comes up
in the morning,
Shines that light around.
One day, without no warning,
Things start jumping up
from the ground.
Well, homegrown's
all right with me.

Surprisingly, Black Sabbath is generally the granddaddy of SR. Surprising, because I generally don't care for 'em. "Solitude" is about the only song I really like. Never been a fan of Ozzy's vocals, I guess.
I'm telling you, though, Danlo, you have to check out Mark Lanegan. Serious Neil Young influences.

Syl, have you tried listening to Black Sabbath's stuff (all the way up to Mob Rules) while reading the Chrons?
(throw in some priest and maiden here and there too, heh
) it's total goth/fantasy-ish!

Generals gathered in their masses
Just like witches at black masses
Evil minds that plot destruction
Sorcerers of death’s construction
In the fields the bodies burning
As the war machine keeps turning
Death and hatred to mankind
Poisoning their brainwashed minds,
oh lord yeah!
