Linden in the Third Chronicles

Post by Revan »

Am i the only person who would find it painful to read three or four books with Linden served by every known creature in the land? Having the Haruchai, people of the land (I would assume), Ramen and their horses, all serving Linden, while Thomas is nothing but a shadow? (A bright one, but still a shadow)

What makes you think that would happen? It didn't happen to TC after he had defeated Lord Foul in the first Chrons. Can't we expect a few years to have gone by between the 2nd and 3rd chronicles, just like TC, Linden returned to our Earth. I would guess that the new people of the Land wouldn't even know who Linden is, and Lord Foul and or the ravers or whatever evil is about in the Land would have had plenty of time to give a twisted version of what had gone before.
On a personal level I would love to read 3 or 4 books with Linden being worshipped but I may be in the minority of people who love that character.
There is also Love in the World.

I like Linden alright...she never really bugged me any more than TC did in the first chrons...I don't think we'll see unnecessary worship...

I'd expect that Linden will go down in folklore, much in the same way that the Unbeliever did between the first two chronicles. I suspect that at least a thousand years will have passed since the second chronicles, as SRD will probably need enough time to pass for Linden to develop a strong emotional bond with her adopted child and this will probably take a few years. I do wonder whether Covenant will be alive in the Land for all the intervening time.

As for Linden being annoying, sure she whines a bit, but until The Power That Preserves I just ached for someone to give TC a good hard slap. Covenant's attitude in the first two books bugged me more than Linden ever did.

*heartily agrees w/Navarino
TC was quite annoying...and Linden was never as much of an ass as he was in the first chrons, never tells anyone trying to be nice to her to go to hell or anything...

Uh oh. I heard that they had constructed 100 foot statues of Linden and Covenant - one on each side of Treacher's Gorge.

(heh heh - just kidding!)

Well, I thought Linden was ok, & of course, she is now firmly enschonsed in the folklore along with Covenant. Even though she was featured rather much in the 2nd Chronicles, it is still called The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant and I hope he doesn't take a back seat.

Is the child adopted? I was hoping more along the lines of it being Covenants, else why would Foul desire an unknown human offspring? If the child was conceived in the Land and then born outside the Land, would the child also be white gold? And if so, capable of use by the Despiser? Long wait to find out.

Oh, I think so PoL. After all, unless the whole Berek-TC theory is correct, TC was born in the 'real world'.

I was just thinking about Berek and TC

I believe Mhoram just made a comment about the Berek-TC theory.....I haven't read it...but this thought just came to mind...this may be a total stretch but, is it possible that the loss of covenants fingers coincides with Berek's loss of his own? I haven't worked out the time issues.....but it's just a thought.

After re-reading that I don't know why thats important at all.....well...okay..now i do

Sounds like an interesting theory, but I'm not sure if the timeline would match up. If I remember correctly, it was less than a year between the loss of Covenant's fingers and when he first went to the Land. But in the Land, it was several thousand years between Berek and when Covenant showed up. The exile from the dessicration lasted for a thousand years or two, and Kevin himself was High Lord for a thousand years (does that sound right?). And there were a few before him, and a thousand years or so of New Lords.

Hi All,

My first post here. Wow, a whole board devoted to SRD, too cool.

So, is this 3rd Series something that is possible/probable? Is Donaldson contemplating a 3rd Series? Or is this just a wish on the part of the posters here? I've tried to find evidence of it being on the burner, but the only sign I've seen of it, is just on this board.

I actually was directed here from another board by a fellow Donaldson Fan

Donaldson is halfway through writing book one of a proposed four books in the 'Last Chronicles'. So far we've heard a little about the basis of the plot, but nothing to give away the story (and hopefully we won't know much until we read the books).
Book one is planned for late 2004.

The third Covenant series is an absolute fact. Several people (myself included) have heard him read from various chapters. And there are two threads hidden somewhere that has more info - one from his old publisher (del Ray) confirming that the next book is in the works, and there's an "email from SRD" thread where Donaldson himself confirms it.

I'm sure you'll run into those posts while browsing through the rest of the board. There's a treasure of information here!

I hope the third "chrons" becomes a reality. With regards to a storyline what about Roger Covenant? if I were Roger I might wish to know what happened to my father. I would also like to see The Land develop into a pseudo-modern enivironment wher Andelain has become like Central Park in a vast city where magic has been all but forgotten... a perfect place for Lord Foul to infiltrate corporate chains with his ravers

As we've said, the 'Last Chronicles' (he always said he'd call it that) is a reality. He's already writing them.
I wouldn't want to see Roger - ever again. He has never had any physical presence in the chronicles and has no character at all - his only purpose was development for Covenant. It is far more releant that the Chrons should relate to the White Gold Wielder, who is at the moment Linden - and Linden would have no relation at all to Covenant's family.
I like the concept that we have heard so far, and it looks to be a good story. I guess it will develop through the course of the four books, though... who knows where it could end.

You do not hear, and so you cannot be redeemed.

In the name of their ancient pride and humiliation, they had made commitments with no possible outcome except bereavement.

He knew only that they had never striven to reject the boundaries of themselves.
