Final Fantasy XIII announced

Post by Worm of Despite »

Final Fantasy XIII has been confirmed for the PS3. Ironic, as XII isn't even out yet!

Oh well, I'm still getting a Wii, unless the PS3 comes out at an affordable price. Metal Gear Solid 4 isn't helping my buying decisions, either. ;)

Good news. Can't wait to see what they cook up with this powerful new system. :)

getting the Wii will be a huge mistake imo. you might be stuck with second rate games or the same old tried and tested Nintendo stuff. good but rather boring now. i'm probably going for the 360 but Sony could convince me.
It'd take you a long time to blow up or shoot all the sheep in this country, but one diseased banana...could kill 'em all.

I didn't even know sheep ate bananas.

The same could be said of the other new systems. PS3 and Xbox 360 both rely on sequels to franchise games like Final Fantasy, Gran Turismo, Halo, Tekken, Virtue Fighter, etc. These are becoming "tried and true" to many others as well.

Additionally, none of the new systems have proven themselves; the first two aren't even out, and the 360 is still young. My choice of the Wii is not writ in stone, of course, but I side by Nintendo because they offer the least expensive machine and the most exciting innovations.

In any case, I'm definitely not going to buy a PS3 or a Wii on launch day. Will wait a year or two for the "killer app" if I have to.

I'll be waiting to see how good FFXII is first. Square have kinda lost it lately - I watched Advent Children last night and it was kinda crap. :(

What's a game-to-film conversion got to do with the quality of future releases in the franchise? Final Fantasy X was brilliant. As were VII and VIII. I haven't played IX, but I'll be getting XII.

Surprised noone's mentioned it yet, but it seems that XIII is the beginning of turning each game in the series into its own franchise. There will be two PS3 games - Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy Versus XIII - and one mobile phone based game - Final Fantasy Agito XIII. It's all part of the "Fabula Nova Crystallis Project", which will be lots of different stories and games set in the same continuity.
It's a logical step from where the series has been heading, what with FFX-2 and all sorts of spin-offs and seperate games set in the same or similar universes to existing titles (Final Fantasy Tactics is an example of it backwards - FFXII is set in the world from that game), it should have been obvious they'd try to turn it into a feature where each new release is not just one installment but a whole new franchise.
I'm not sure how much I like the idea, since one of the main features of the series is that each time it starts of with a fresh setting and new system.

I'm just worried that Square are losing the plot a little. It won't stop me from buying FFXII, but I won't be excited about XIII until I know XII is good - kinda like proof that they haven't completely dropped the ball.

Square Enix is about the only thing keeping me considering getting the next gen ps. With such a long delay since FFX (x-2 didn't satisfy me), even XII might not be enough, but wave another Dragon Quest under my nose...
"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”
