I found out when I went back home for holidays that a publishing house has started re-translating and re-printing the Chronicles in a new edition. Thus far, they only printed Lord Foul's Bane, but I think TIW will be soon out. Incidentally (for those who play the Pantheon game in the Close ;), news of the edition were given to me by none other than Argothoth, who decided to read the Chronicles after joining the forum to play the game... thus far he likes them and he went past Lena's rape, so I score one point for a friend brought to the Chronicles ;)

Good news, huh? Well, almost, if it weren't for a question... how's the quality of the translation? Well, I haven't checked the whole book at length, but I perused it a little, and something more I learned from Argothoth. The translation may not be as bad as the old version, but it is still quite horrible.

Examples?

1. The title. "Lord Foul's Bane" has been renamed "The Conquest of the Scepter".

2. The Staff of Law becomes the Scepter of Law.

3. We have the usual "Thomas Covenant l' Incredulo" ("Thomas Covenant the Incredulous") mistake (but truth be told, the other possibilities ("Thomas Covenant, il Miscredente" and "Thomas Covenant, il Non Credente") would have been even more inappropriate.

4. The High Lord has become the Great Lord.

5. I think that the Stonedownors have become the Stonefriends.

6. The Woodhelvennin have become the "altofustini" ("tall little trunks").

7. The ringthane has become the Mr. Ring.

8. Kevin's Watch became "Vista di Kevin" (Kevin's Sight).

I don't remember how Kevin's Lore was translated, but I'm fairly certain it was faulty. However, at the very least Saltheart Foamfollower was properly translated as Cuordisale Seguischiuma...

You just reminded me that Lord Foul's pride has also probably been deeply wounded, too... the Italian translation calls him "Lord Inganno", which roughly means "Lord Trickery".

I'm afraid of many things, now... how will they translate "Foul's Creche", "Sunbane", how did they translate "Illearth Stone", what about the Ravers... I shudder at the thought!
