Definitely got to finish Gap. Start over from the beginning, and go through as fast as you can. It will be a hell of a ride. *snip* At the risk of sounding like a lunatic fanatic ;) I wholeheartedly agree with Malik - finish the Gap you fool!! But don't pick it up where you left off. Start again fr...

Thanks again Onos! It's exactly what I need to keep going. I didn't want to come into this fascinating forum and just bad-mouth a book, so hopefully it didn't come across this way. I just needed exactly what I said - a jolt. And your passion for the story has re-ignited my interest, so thanks! I'll ...

I can't help but feeling that one of the great tragedies of this world is that the Killing Stroke does, indeed exist. Not literally, of course, just as there's no such thing as a Vulcan Nerve Pinch. But the fact exists that an amoral person is completely capable of depriving another of their freedo...

I'm on page 378. I suppose about a third of the way through. I enjoy Quick Ben's character, and I'm a bit interested in the Crippled God. It feels significant. I was enjoying Whiskeyjack's character in previous books, but so far he hasn't featured much. And the T'lan Imass are fascinating. I suppose...

But then the nerishi-qa DOES strike an apparent "killing stroke" but it doesn't touch the shin-te warrior. Then the nerishi-qa declares defeat. My understanding was that the nerishi-qa never completed the stroke, recognizing that he would be unable to deprive the shin-te of his choice. I'...

Memories of Ice - need a jolt!

I admit to you all - I rarely lose interest in a book. I'm not a philosopher. I'm not an aspiring writer, although I appreciate a well written story. I'm not overly concerned with plot or pacing (at least I don't think I am) - but I just can't help losing interest in Memories of Ice. I haven't read ...

Was it SRD that said that the best way to deceive is to 'almost' tell the truth? Not quite the full truth, but something close to it. This is the best way to mislead someone... It seems to translate from his stories to the GI! The devious Mr Donaldson... One of the great pleasures I have gained from...

I agree!

If I were walking down the street and hadn't chosen to die (just going to the shop for example), yet you attacked me from behind and killed me, then there has to be a killing stroke.

Perhaps "there is no killing stroke" is only valid amongst "honorable" people?

Re: One-Size-Fits-All Gen Disc Stats

ok Im totally confused. help a newbie out. I see some members with like 27000 posts 8O so how come the highest member posts is 4763? I'm guessing that it is total posts in the "General Discussion" section, not total of ALL posts in the entire forum. But I'm a 'newbie' too, so you may need...

OK, I've re-read it now - a couple of times. And there are a few little issues that I'm still wondering about. So, according to the story, there is no killing stroke, there is only choice, or despair. Despair is the Killing Stroke. When Isla, the mashu-te master called to the shin-te master that the...

Just wondering: I still can't access the www.stephendonaldson.com (so the one without the "R"). If I access stephenRdonaldson it works and has been for quite some time. Comes up with a site forbidden page. Am I the only one having probs with this? I'm having the same problems - is the 'R'...

A quick question for the ignorant (ie. me) - what does Shall Pass Utterly refer to? It's a prequel to the 1st Chrons focusing primarily on an ADD nine-year-old, Thomas, having to deal with missing the bus to school... It's actually the name SRD first chose for book three of the Last Chron...

I'm guessing those who read the Gap before the Chronicles are in the minority. What was your reaction to the Chronicles after reading the Gap? Is the Gap your favourite, or did you prefer the Chrons? I had a really hard time getting into the Chrons. It wasn't until my reread of LFB that I truly und...

She is going to read the Chronicles next. I'm excited to see how she views Donaldson's most profitable and famous work, after reading the Gap first. That's how I did it; Gap then Chronicles. Me too, except I read Mordant's Need and Daughter of Regals before I read the Gap (a friend was trying to ea...

OK, I'm determined to re-read it now. Time to put down Memories of Ice (just quietly, don't mention it to SE fans - heh, but I'm getting a bit bored by it - just can't feel anything for the characters.... but that's another topic...). I'll come back later and read this thread again and try to enligh...
