Sounds intentional on their part - 'hotel near convention center' is bound to get more booking than 'hotel in the middle of nowhere'. Question is whether or not they get any repeat customers...

Well, a 15 minute walk is not far...

(Hahaha, I recently read that the difference between an Englishman and an American is that an Englishman thinks 100 miles is a long way, while an American thinks 100 years is a long time. :D )

There is a lot of truth to that. Strangely, the difference in how people think about distance versus time separates us into equivalence classes here. In Texas, we typically think of driving in terms of time--20 minutes to work, 2 hours to drop the kids at their father's, etc--while people in smaller States think of driving in terms of distance.

Ms. Lebwohl is friends with an English author (Samantha something-or-other); I'll have her mention what you said, Av, and see what she says.

I've heard that saying as well. 15 minutes isn't far/long, but it would be inconvenient if you're making frequent trips.

In SA driving is almost always measured in terms of time, although when distance is used, it's used interchangeably.

Also, we equate one with the other, if not always accurately. Km (under 100) are considered equivalent to minutes. Over 100 and it's hours.

So 20km are assumed to equal 20 minutes driving, while 300km are considered the equivalent of 3 hours.

(SA is twice the size of Texas IIRC. :D )

Low end estimate. Plus what I'm considering here is the fact that in Edinburgh I often have 1-2 hour gaps between shows where I tend to pop back to my hotel room; having to walk 15+ minutes there and back every time would make this impractical.

Yes, that is about correct.

Murrin, I need to find the link to the story about this guy who built a walking bike--he has taken a small treadmill, connected it to a motor, then put that onto a bicycle chassis so that as you walk the bike propels forward at a pretty decent clip. A 15-minute walk could be cut down to about 5 minutes with one of those.

Speaking of bikes, a woman in Ghana started a business making bicycles with bamboo frames. She now employs 35 people and gives bicycles to children who have a long way to walk to school.

Grieving is a weird process. Today all day I just felt numb. I didn't want anything in my life that normally brings me joy. I didn't want to do anything. (But of course, I forced myself through an okay day of school because that's the deal.) What makes it tolerable is that I understand it is part of grieving. Up one day, down the next.

Fair enough. Find a coffee shop and make it your temporary base in the city centre for the day?

well since this is the "How do you feel today?" thread, I'll volunteer for myself I've been stressed and feeling like I don't have time, and kinda grouchy/feeling-sorry-for-myself to boot.

(Started teaching a math class that is kind of a job I've yearned to be able to do for multiple years now, but now that I have to prepare a lesson each week, it seems less glamorous.)

What class are you teaching? I taught algebra at a university for two years eons ago but I also tutored people in every subject all the way up to differential equations.

I don't think I have the patience to teach math any more, though.

It's for math competitions.
I'm teaching my class to a handful of kids prepping for Mathcounts and the AMC tests. (formerly the AHSME.)

Ah. Me, I love getting into other people's heads for the purposes of teaching them math and motivating interest.

And iunno, you encounter a wide variety of ability levels and motivation levels in tutoring. (Do you think that if you could target being able to get certain types of tutoring student, it would be different?)
