Fuzzy and I were talking about the possibility of setting up a Skype, Google Hangouts etc. video connection to the fest, if and when Donaldson appears (with or without that fanny bag :P). Major obstacle might be the +7/9h time difference.

We're also requesting a pile of signed books. Will pay for tomes/postage.

For information purposes, it looks like the WFC is happening at the end of October (27-the end of all things). Ali and John tend to go to those, so having it during balloon feast might make sense.

I need to figure out when I'm taking PTO, and what various travels I will make... And who can handle my cat for an extended period of time without being consumed by the Abyss

Yes U there will be beer and watchers and definitely good food and great fun. There may even be pina coladas and getting caught in the rain. Cord Hurn should really join us, we all know how much he loves those things....
I'm interested, but must see if I can make it or not. I'll be doing my final stint as a summertime biologist in Alpine, and looking for my next paying gig (the 5-year survey of spotted owls will be completed by the end of September this year), so it's the uncertainty of my future work situation that must first be resolved.

I'd love to see you all again, for sure! And Jenn, you just know I prefer mai-tais! :D

All the Jewish holidays are in October this year, so unlikely I could take time off for this, tempting as it is.

Getting excited about this...

To sum up, for non-FB peeps (WTF is wrong with you people anyway :? ): The thinking now is that lorin will get a house near Taos for the month of October, along with a temporary base of operations in ABQ, probably for the final Balloon Fest weekend, which runs Oct. 1-9. So we're talking Oct. 7-9, more or less, for the Watch party. Surprising nobody, prices for lodgings in ABQ during the Balloon Fest are sky-high (I see what I did there...), so if anyone has a friend/cousin/whatever there who might rent to us cheap, speak up.

I have a credit on SW Airlines that should pay for half my ticket, so as long as there's a place to pitch my tent, I'll be there. ;)

I'm friends with several KW folks on FB and I haven't seen any conversation about it. (And I've even been signed in this weekend.) Is there a special group I have to join? (See, I'm even learning the lingo!) It's unlikely that I will be attending, but I would like to spam it with cat pics -- uh -- I mean, see the conversation.

Edit: I found a group that seems to be us, but doesn't seem to have recent activity. Aside from that, it's recommending that I become friends with a fellow named Kevin Swatch. I fail at Facebook.

Oh, those things are cool, Jenn! With pina coladas, I just think they're too sweet. I seem to remember you telling me you don't like them, either, but because of the pineapple.

The single-biggest threat to continued participation on Kevin's Watch seems to be the rise in Facebook participation (it's hard to know that for certain, of course, since correlation doesn't necessarily = cause-and-effect). To combat that trend to some degree, I REFUSE to make Facebook friends with anybody I've met through Kevin's Watch; we can talk just fine right here, says I. That way, I won't be an enabler to KW's decline.

I keep in touch with some family members, friends, and professional connections on Facebook. But there's always the possibility of getting into a public fight with them over religion and politics. ( I've got a crazy cousin who comes on there on FB trying to instigate desires to "take out" this or that politician he disapproves of, and if he doesn't shut his mouth soon, he could have the Secret Service knocking at his door.) Also, on a couple of occasions, I've had former professional connections come on FB and warn me about the pictures I'd been posting about forestry work potentially getting me in trouble because of possible safety violations or because they say I'm giving away too much information about the work that we do and where we do it. Really, I think Facebook's a dangerous place, and overrated. I'd much rather hang out and contribute to Kevin's Watch, especially since I just ignore the Tank.

Thanks Ali and Damelon!

Now for a whole new round of match-the-person-to-their-Watch-persona.

I agree with Cord Hurn for the most part - Facebook is eeevil. I first joined in 2011 for WoW-related reasons (my GM lured me with puppy pictures!) - and left after a couple of months. Didn't miss it, but WoW folks dragged me back in the middle of last year, this time because it was mandatory for raid information. Because it had killed the guild's forum. So yeah, useful, but eeeevil.

I don't use it for anything besides WoW stuff and cat pics, and I don't use my real name because I reallly don't want to have to juggle being an active member of WoW's gay community with being in the closet in regards to work and family.

I think it has had a negative impact on our post count here, but we will survive.

So for accomodations, I have a giant living room/dining room and two bathrooms and my roomie is Rigel. We have offered up the apartment for anyone who wants to air up a mattress and crash with us. The apartment is also a block down the street from Danlo and Lady Tam's house. There is also a couch that is very comfy for sleeping.

The good news is my daughter seems keen on coming with me, provided I'm paying! When I say daughter, don't imagine a child, she will be 39 next month. I need to renew my passport & ESTA, and am not a little worried about health insurance due to my head thing last year, but we'll get over that. End of October not too good for me - I have a speaking engagement on the 20th and it's one that was cancelled because I was in hospital when I was supposed to go last year so I don't want to have to change it again. Also, I refuse to sleep on anyone's floor. Too old for that now! Wherever the meet is, perhaps daughter & I can book a room together somewhere. There seemed to be lots of places about. Is it going to be in ABQ? We won't have transport by the way so that's 2 of us to cart about. We do both have good walking legs.
I am playing all the right notes, but not necessarily in the right order!

Julie hunkered down with her phone (computer) and road atlas and came up with our trip in October.

19 states in 17 days!

Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana.

we are mapping it out, finding sites to see such as Mt. Rushmore, Custer's Last Stand, Teddy Roosevelt National Park, and so on.

a few states are just to be driven through. but some like SOuth Dakota have a ton of sites to see.

we are having tee-shirts made. :) and I have to find the odd road side attractions that exist along the way.

we are super excited for this. and we will be with you guys Friday, Saturday and leaving Sunday.
