I've managed to fight off the flu or whatever it is twice, but I think it's caught up. Yay. Not sure what's worse - being sick on the weekend or having to work sick. Actually, it's looking at my full bank of sick leave that I'm not allowed to touch because no one else is willing to do my job. And still feeling expendable.

And the job hunt continues...

Uggh, that is really annoying.
Is HR in on the whole "in practice, Sorus is not allowed to take sick leave" agreement?

Or is HR comparable to Dilbert's company's HR team, run by the utterly trustworthy (?) Catbert?
"People without hope not only don't write novels, but what is more to the point, they don't read them.
They don't take long looks at anything, because they lack the courage.
The way to despair is to refuse to have any kind of experience, and the novel, of course, is a way to have experience."

That's about the size of it. I wouldn't touch our HR department with a 10-foot pole. Whether or not they are trustworthy, their very first action would be to get on the phone to my boss. And while that might result in me getting time off, it would also leave him hopping mad at me for going over his head. Retaliation is completely illegal, of course, but there are ever-so-many things he could do that would be nearly impossible to prove were done in retaliation.

(Have I mentioned that I love Dilbert? Scott Adams knows what it's about.)

Bloody Monday. :D

I could probably write a sitcom about my workplace. Granted, it would probably be cancelled after the pilot and the reviews would call it 'unfunny and implausible'.

The best part of this whole thing was that my boss was patient zero of this whole flu outbreak, and came to work sick with his typical 'if I can tough it out, the rest of you can too' attitude, then after getting everyone sick, he took two sick days.

Same guy who took three (3! THREE!) vacations last year while deciding I didn't need even one.

Apparently I am now keeping score.

I just can't believe there's nothing you can effectively do about it. I mean, I understand why, but it's just so messed up.

'Effective' is the key word there. There are plenty of things I could do, but it would be a Pyrrhic victory, at best.

Would the "patient zero" boss even understand the concept of a Pyrrhic victory?

Right.

More than 1 year since you've had a vacation? That's frustrating enough when you've just started a new job and you're saving up vacation hours! :-/

It's like what you need is something that will give him the excuse to just make one of your co-workers suck it up and do your job for a week (or two)... but where he can't be blamed for "letting" you take the time off.
In light of this, I am rooting for some kind of loudly and publicly freaking-out the next time one of your time-off request forms come back denied.
(The resentment is real.)
