of course I opened myself up to that...
But it sounds kind of bad to say "I don't click links friends post."

Worried about what you might find? Or just the time it takes?
In the immortal words of Grampa Simpson*, "a little from Column A, a little from Column B."
Mostly Column B (time!) though, lately.
Also, I remember my first months on the internet, those years ago... and I am still a bit of a spaz.
One link would lead to another, and when would I ever get back to where I started out?!?

So I got back home Wednesday night. Had a great time letting u. drive me around. We found the Long Man who hid himself so successfully from u. and Frosty last year, as well as a waterfall and a whole bunch of beautiful seaside places. Amazingly enough, the weather cooperated -- I had only a couple of drops of rain the whole week I was there. Paybacks are hell, however; my Boston-to-DC flight was delayed, and I got stuck sitting next to a woman with the world's whiniest children. At least it was a short flight... And yesterday morning, the toilet in our new apartment overflowed. So in other words, everything's back to normal.
Back to work on Monday. Bleah. I want another week off.

You'd think someone that tall would have difficulty hiding. Glad you had a good trip.
My graphics card decided that today was a good day to die, and I think my PSU isn't far behind. I love this computer. Had it for almost 8 years and this is the first time I've had any kind of problems. Trying to decide if I want to bother fixing it vs. replacement. It's still decent, spec-wise, for now, but it's skipping gleefully towards obsolescence. Fixing is obviously friendlier towards the old bank account, but then it becomes a matter of what's going to break next and how much that will cost to fix, vs. a shiny new computer with warranties and whatnot. Ugh. There's never a good time for this sort of thing.

Sorry about your computer woes, Sorus. You're right -- there's never a good time for it. I've been having an issue with my graphics card on Facebook, primarily (I think) because I haven't upgraded to Windows 10. Which I can't do, because the virtual C: drive isn't big enough -- I'd have to wipe the whole hard drive in order to relocate the partition, which I ain't doing.

So I broke down and bought a new computer - a decision I'm already regretting, since a bottom-of-the-line gaming computer was out of my budget (bought it anyway) and it's defective out of the box. So now I have to weigh dragging it back to the place I bought it - that's 20 blocks of bad neighborhood carrying a huge box that weighs over 30 pounds - paying a cab to transport me and aforementioned huge box - dealing with exchanging it when I already installed all my stuffs on it - or just living with the defect, which may not even be a defect. The keyboard stays powered on after I fully power down the tower. I tried all the USB ports. I tried the new keyboard it came with as well as my original keyboard. And it's just the keyboard, not the mouse. I can unplug the keyboard when I'm not using it - that's not a big deal, but if it's a symptom of a larger issue that I haven't discovered yet, I have a limited amount of time to exchange it.
I know it's a stupid problem that's really not worth any stress, but it's added frustration to a week (month, year) of nothing going right.

Arrgh.
Is it at all amusing to you if the first thing I thought of went something like: "Well, if this was within that one dream she'd had, she could just ask her guildmaster to drive her there in his semi!"?
Yeah...

That would be handy. Unfortunately I already know that I'm not going to bother dealing with it. I hate exchanging stuff at the best of times, and with this sort of thing there's always the fear that they're just going to say 'Hey idiot, you just need to press this button.' I don't think it's anything like that - I've been through all the power settings and keyboard settings and whatnot and it's not as though it's in a sleep mode - there is no reason for the keyboard to have power. My old keyboard flickers like it knows something's wrong and it's trying to shut itself down... And that's bad, isn't it? That's a bad sign. Erk. Okay, I have two weeks to figure this out.

Can I suggest maybe a walk [minus 30lb box] up to the store - or even a telephone call to ask for advise on the problem ....and then if it doesn't work, that one of their guys actually makes the walk down to your place, or organises the transport for the new one etc. It's called 'getting what you've paid for without having shed loads of hassle and expense'.
Anyways - sorry that things are rough at present Sorus. Guy once told me that all it takes for something to happen is that three peole have to agree that it will. Me, you and Linna makes the three and we all agree I'm betting that from now on things are going to look up for you! [ Can't hurt can it?]

'Of course - you know you have.'
'Then let it end.'
That's a good idea - might drop in after work tomorrow, certainly don't feel like dealing with it today. The only semi-logical thing I can think of is that maybe the USB ports stay live all the time so people can charge their phones and whatnot even when the computer is off. And maybe my old keyboard acts up because it was designed before such things were common. If such things are common. See, I'm trying to justify it as a feature so I don't have to deal with it. But it still doesn't explain why the keyboard stays on, because that's just a gratuitous waste of power.
I tried going on the manufacturer's 'live help' link, which claimed to have a wait of approximately one minute and 30 seconds. I disconnected after an hour, but in all fairness, they did say approximately. That's what I get for buying an off-brand, but the comparable ASUS was twice the price, and there was no way I could justify that.

That's what happens when you go away. It's as much work as work is.

Yes, it's common. Or relatively. It depends on your motherboard. My front USB ports stay powered, (for charging things), but my back ones don't. Other boards power only their USB 3.0 ports all the time.
You can turn it off at the wall, or apparently enabling a feature called EUP/ERP in the bios will turn off USB ports on many (but not all) boards when the system is off.

That's good to know. I have two 3.0 ports on the top and four 2.0 ports on the back. They all power the keyboard when the main power is off, and none of them power the mouse in the same situation, which still seems odd. As expected, they won't diagnose any problems without looking at the actual unit, which is fair. It doesn't seem likely to implode or explode or any other type of 'plode, so I'll live with it and maybe mess around with it more later. Windows 10 isn't as icky as I thought it would be, since I can totally avoid using the obnoxious Windows 8-style menu.

I'm still on Win 7 both at work and at home. Just doing my part for the rebellion.
I might have already mentioned that I went back to work on Monday after two weeks off. I think I'm almost over the mourning period. It was *really* nice not to have to be here. Still not over the cold I caught in Ireland -- there's still a fair amount of coughing and nose-blowing -- but it seems to be getting better. So there's that.
