The first movie was the best, but I enjoyed the books more for the most part. Like Sarge said, quick fun and easy reads.

So I think most of us are in agreement - first movie best, and then it gets muddled a bit. I liked bits here and there, and was satisfied with the conclusion, but, yeah, never really floated my boat.
And Uss...I can't say I got into the Harry Potter books (or movies, really) until the 3rd one. It was then that the story really moved into a bit more original territory. There was always a good sense of humor throughout, which is what kept me reading. I felt after reading the first one that I was reading a combination of A Wizard of Earthsea from Ursula K. Leguin, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Life is a waste of time
Time is a waste of life
So get wasted all of the time
And you'll have the time of your life
