Kevinswatch and Social Media

Post by aTOMiC »

Does the Watch have an official Facebook page?

I ran a search and have found none.

If we do is there a clear header that directs people to the Watch proper? I know we have the "Watchers" Facebook group but that's not really a proper signpost.

I don't know of a Twitter presence either.

I know some of you would say that the message board and social media are in congruent in that one tends to make the other irrelevant however I hold the belief that they both feed life into each other. You can get structure and an organized, static home of topics and ideas on the Kevinswatch message board that Facebook and Twitter are incapable of providing and conversely social media's strength is the way it is able to immediately and fluidly integrate itself in one's daily life.

I am sure that Stephen R Donaldson has fans that include members of the popular media, especially since "nerd" culture has emerged from relative obscurity to a widely recognized and appreciated genre. I'm wondering if Chris Hardwick, for example, knew about Kevinswatch would he be a likely nerd champion for the site. Or pick whatever recognizable celebrity you happen to think of that reeks of nerdom.

With Donaldson's new trilogy coming soon there is going to be a likely increase in interest in SRD and all of his works and this fan site will most likely get pulled along for the ride.

I for one would like to see Kevinswatch enjoy a resurgence of activity and interest and I'm sure many of you do as well.

I agree, an official FB page would be a good idea, as well as a mobile app, which I've been whining for for a couple of years.

I think everyone here knows what I think of FB and similar ilk, but I will say this:

When my WoW guild was doing a big recruiting drive a couple-few years back, we advertised on the WoW forums, on the in-game chat channels, at gaming conventions, and on Twitter. 95% of our new members came from Twitter.

So who wants to run an official FB page? I'm not on FB, so don't look at me, but it's a damn good idea.

I would prefer not to run the aforementioned page myself however I did start a proof of concept page with my facebook account yesterday. Its incredibly easy. The question is would the root account need to be created by Jay or Vain so that they are able to maintain a relationship with what is essentially a branch of their respective brain child. After that authority can be granted to someone who actually runs the page. Kind of like the way Avatar does all of the actual work here at the Watch and the other admins sort of observe from afar. :D

This makes sense. This is how companies and individuals trying to promote themselves work it.

Still, I reckon it's something that takes a lot of perseverance.

They don't take long looks at anything, because they lack the courage.

There is a Donaldson FB group. I thought I belonged to it but I can't find it.
I might have deleted myself.
It was annoying.
Lots of Noobs that asked questions and ignored the answers that were literal quotes from Donaldson's GI.

I wasn't aware of that group but it sounds like it was at least something. However its still not the same thing as an official FB page that is a fixed home plate for our presence on social media. You always have to have some easily accessible mustering point for everyone to refer to. I am a member of a few FB groups and they are just groups. You'd have to scroll through thousands of posts to find pictures or specific information. A FB page that is managed and updated can serve as a reference point and also a gateway to the message board.

That's the key point. My biggest concern is that we'll have more people defecting to FB.

Its not that I don't have a similar concern I just feel like the benefits outweigh the possible negative impact. As long as the FB page makes the message board its top priority, announcing news about the message board, special events, quotes from interesting posts, pictures etc. and consistently making links to KW conspicuous it should still direct people to our site as opposed to drawing them away.

Worked on a KW facebook page over the weekend but got hung up on artwork. I tried different combinations of images taken from our KW banner etc but nothing seemed to fit. I decided to create a few images from scratch but didn't end up having much free time. I will keep at it until I've got something I can share.
