The Watch's Best Kept Secret
I tend to scurry, like a well-trained rat, along the same alleyways in the Watch headed for familiar destinations (the cheese at the end of the tunnel). I wish that people knew how much fun Mallory's is, and of the creative boost you can get by Writing Badly or by Corrupting a Wish, composing a little Haiku; or the non-taxing gratification of the Change a Letter Game and the wonders of the Countdown.
Of course, since aTOMic and dANDelion moved in and made it their messy man-cave, you may have to go hunting for the best games. (I really miss null's dada offerings!)
What do you feel is the Watch's best kept secret? Tell us why you love your chosen enclave, and maybe see a little more traffic and fresh ideas there.

You know, I tried to get involved in some of the RPG action. I just couldn't make head or tail of how to participate. I don't know anyone in RL who could help me get it through my thick skull. (At the school where I teach, the high school uses a made-up RPG every year as a language arts activity! Progress is posted in the Library. I think that is very cool!!)Menolly wrote:When it was active, Gravin Threndor. I still occasionally go back and read through the various games, especially the archived ones.

That's not untrue but the fact is dAN and I have been polluting Mallorys since 2003. I just took about 6 years off for unrelated reasons and now we're back.
Thanks to Null in particular for keeping the seat warm for us.

Well it's no secret that I'm a Bad-Writing Contest partisan...
but my favorite haunt is the Hall of Gifts.
Awhile back, ali (I had been thinking she'd been gone for awhile too, sorus!!) started the "Two minutes... go!" thread which is a challenge to just write a random scrap of a story for 2 minutes.
One of my friends once said something like,
"Old strategy to get myself to work on my project: set a small goal - open Word and write the first two paragraphs."
"New strategy to get myself to work on my project: set a MINUSCULE goal - Open Word and write one word."
(Guess which one caused him to get a bunch done!)
Well, writing for only 2 minutes was about my speed...
Between that and Bad Writing, it was the difference between writing stuff and... never writing anything ever. (my previous trajectory.)
So I'm pretty grateful.

I miss when that thread was active, but I suppose I am as much to blame as anyone. I probably shouldn't have tried to swap fanfic for original work; I guess I learned a lesson about where my strengths are.Linna Heartlistener wrote: but my favorite haunt is the Hall of Gifts.

Ok, sorry. Deer stops complaining about dAN and TOM.dANdeLION wrote:Deer, your'e one of the nicest people on the Watch. I don't understand why you keep complaining about Tom and me .Please stop it.deer of the dawn wrote:

And there was much rejoicing.

We could start it up again. (:Sorus wrote:I miss when that thread was active, but I suppose I am as much to blame as anyone.
I am always itching to write 2-minute scraps, and someone else just... present and working the same kind of task (i.e. writing vignettes, snapshots and short dialogues) actually makes it possible for me to do things I otherwise can't.
Admittedly, it is also fun when there's 4-6 people coming up with different things, too.
I sense disappointment and maybe a bit of kicking yourself.Sorus wrote:I probably shouldn't have tried to swap fanfic for original work...
("probably nuthin' worse than kicking myself that I've done," though, I suppose!)
