Kevinswatch.com on Twitter and Facebook
For promotional purposes we have recently created an official Kevinswatch.com Facebook page:
https://www.facebook.com/kevinswatchBB/
...and a Kevinswatch.com Twitter account: @kevinswatchBB
Both sites are new and I would encourage everyone who has either a Twitter or Facebook account to either "follow" or "like" the sites. (Or both if you are able)
I'd also like to ask for your help with content.
If you have any ideas for an official Kevinswatch.com Tweet or a Facebook post please post it here and I'll tweet/post it from the respective account. Remember a tweet has to be 140 characters or less.
An example: When I finished creating the Twitter account I tweeted the following - "Is It unrealistic to even attempt to make a Chronicles of Thomas Covenant movie?" Which was taken from one of our current discussions. I also included a link to that discussion thread.
kevinswatch.ihugny.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=23368
I think a good way to promote our message board through social media is to not only stimulate a conversation but also include a link back to a continuing and more in depth discussion on our site when possible.
Also please let me know if you have any suggestions regarding the design of the Facebook page good or bad.
Thanks,
Tom

Sorry, I hate to sound negative, but I don't see the point. We already have a website here. I don't use Facebook. My kids don't use Facebook (nor do most millennials). Twitter is for low attention span skimmers, right? I can't imagine using it when there are message boards for things you're interested in. I've never read a single tweet. Do people actually seek out meaningful conversation on Facebook and Twitter? I have no interest in opening my life to Zuckerberg. I have the phone numbers of everyone I care about.

I'd say it's worth a try. People might see it and remember they read SRD way back when, and want to come here and talk more.
I don't personally use either platform, but when my guild was recruiting a while back, we tried recruiting from in-game, from booths at gaming conventions, and on Twitter. About 90% of our new people came from Twitter.
Not saying it'd have the same results here, but I don't see any harm in trying.

This initiative wouldn't be of much specific use to you, Z given your feelings about social media. It could however benefit the Watch at large.Zarathustra wrote:Sorry, I hate to sound negative, but I don't see the point. We already have a website here. I don't use Facebook. Its pretty much only to expose our message board to fans of SRD who use social media but have no idea we exist. After setting up both sites I have run a search and have found hundreds of SRD and COTC comments suggesting there are quite a few users out there that may be interested in Kevinswatch.com.

KW doesn't play well on cellphones. But FB does.
I have KW friends on FB that I don't see posting here anymore.
I invited them all to the FB page.
Maybe it will stimulate conversation back to the Watch.
Twitter though....no idea.

In essence I'm with Z on this. In addition I'd suggest that most people have a pretty fixed timeframe for internet usage every day - and if they spend it on Facebook/Twitter then they won't spend it here. Is there not a danger of us actually reducing daily posting counts rather than adding to them?

Nah, especially stuff like Twitter...for most people who use it, it's an "on the go" platform. I have an account, but since I don't use a smart phone, I don't usually bother to log in.
Dunno how much it will help, but it won't hurt. (Oh, for Twitter, use hashtags...they're searchable and indexed.)

Its not as good on my phone as on my laptop or desktop but I manage to make it work.sgt.null wrote:I can not get the Watch to cooperate with my phone.
As to the benefits of a Twitter and Facebook presence it is already producing dividends.
We have over a dozen followers on Twitter after only a day and almost all of them are SRD fans that aren't existing KW members. I've checked. It doesn't mean we've picked up a bunch of new posters but it does indicate interest.
On the Facebook side we've had that site a bit longer and after yesterday's activity there are a handful of new likes and we had MIA members of the Watch log in here because of it so there is no down side to this, at least so far.
BTW with the 140 character limitation on Twitter you can't possibly carry on a discussion there the way we do here at the Watch. Imagine if the folks that post in the Tank were limited to 140 characters.
Facebook and Twitter are only gateway accounts to help people find our web site and can't possibly replace us. To my mind that's a positive. Especially since it didn't cost us anything except a little bit of my time.

Today's Tweet/Facebook post (which was posted to both) was:
"How would you rate the books of The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant?"
Which of course included a link to the discussion here on the Watch.
kevinswatch.ihugny.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=24534
I'll try to remember to do something like this daily or at least a couple of times a week.
FYI

I'm not a user of either so don't really know how it will work - but if it helps draw folks toward us then go it!

Uh, one of those is probably me, my Twitter account is under a different name. (Although I have an alt account here under that name, so you might have picked it up as a member afterall.)aTOMiC wrote:
